If someone is on your property and they refuse to leave, what is the best course of action?

(Just imagine, that, for instance, they were harassing him for 10+ minutes after he had said 'no' and shown them the door?)

Ummmm logic would say call the police...

I was in no way saying that what this man did was logical.... I'm just saying that unless he's a very poor shot (and therefore shouldn't have a gun) I would think he intended to not hit them.... I certainly don't think he's the brightest candle on the fruitcake.

We civil minded people in the UK would just get on the bowled & call for the plod to ask them leave

The police in Britain are often lazy, incompetent, politicised a***holes (though there are quite a lot of nice ones too, although they're usually the older ones). It could take them an hour to turn up.

What next?

Although yes, calling the local plod might be the answer. ;)

I find the whole story odd. I've never had a Witness or a Mormon refuse to leave... Though I, too, invite them in telling them that I have pretty firm beliefs and though I'd love to learn their philosophies, the chances of converting me are slim to none. Most of the time, I am highly disappointed because they chose to leave. I have never heard of a situation such as described in the story...

However, I also think that if the grumpy Catholic guy had wanted to shoot someone, he certainly would have....

Very unfortunate.

I only once tried counter measures, though I have been sorely tempted on occasion.

I've heard of people using a garden hose to get rid of stubborn Jehovah's Witnesses, but it doesn't sound like they did anything aggressive that would warrant pulling a gun. Personally, If someone is being really pushy knocking on the door or ringing the doorbell between 10 and noon on a Saturday, I just don't get out of bed. if only one day they would take a hint...

It seems to me that if joining a totalitarian religion and trying to work your own way to heaven is made such a pain, and if there is no hell, there's no reason not to go out and get a big bottle of vodka, blow, and a few hookers, then when you are done with that go create a massive scam that preys on the elderly and kill anyone that tries to expose it!

I agree with both of you. The first step is to call the police, though in this country that could take a while also in a non-emergency situation. Assuming the woman was not outright lying and they were trespassing, the man would be justified in using “reasonable” force to eject them. Arming yourself with a rifle and using it to push them off your property (sort of like what Jesus did to the merchants in the temple) I think would be reasonable though I wouldn't actually chamber a round unless they pushed back, let alone fire a warning shot.

I like John_Browning's suggestion of using a garden hose even better though.

If its JW or Mormons, start blasting Rammstein 'Du Hast' and come to the door in nothing but a bath towel with a giant black dildo in your hand and invite them in

As for turning the hose on them.... I still think that's a little harsh... Though, I've never never been in this situation so I can't imagine what I would do if the police failed to respond... Probably turn up some offensive music really, really loud and wait for the neighbors to call the police with a noise complaint.... That will turn them up fairly quickly....

It's not 'bowled', it's 'blower', referring (I think) to an old-style telephone.

'Plod' or 'PC Plod' is a somewhat pejorative British slang term used to refer to a police officer, particularly one slow-witted or dull. A more recent variant is the plod, meaning the police force in general. The term originates from the character Mr. Plod, a police officer in the Noddy stories written by Enid Blyton.
