Now there we see a not unimportant distinction.

To say [may I shift the proposition, just to vary the monotony?] "Voting for Barack Obama is absurd" expresses an opinion that is possibly the poster's legitimate conclusion based on available evidence. The reader may legitimately address the issue with counterevidence or [as AG critiquing an excursus from me] questions as to the validity of the poster's reasoning.

Even if it be expressed with vulgarity [the "crap" that began this], I have no problem with such a statement. I may choose to reprimand the poster [language! there are ladies and fussy professors present] but the content is fine with me.

If the poster hands us "anyone who XXX is a mean spirited bitchface" [quote from another forum] I may feel this is a personal attack [and as pointed out elsewhere if anyone FEELS attacked the rules today say somebody DID attack him / her / it] and - not without some justification - complain.

But if one posts "opposition to Obama is racism" or "monotheists are atheists with a twist" or "trinitarian Christians worship three gods" - this is merely pathetic. After the first 20 hearings, we see that this is neither expression of an opinion - there is no thoughtful processing of data involved - nor a personal attack, since the one repeating it has no idea who he is talking to.

Rather, while not inoffensive, it is the pathetic kneejerk boilerplate of the Polack joke, or the fellow eighth graders who addressed me with the Name I do NOT Reveal. It is, I am sorry to say, simply a group identity shibboleth - "you are a Green Monkey and I am not."

Which is, I repeat, pathetic, because if ruveyn [for only one example] for all his three God forelock tugging is not just as much a Green Monkey as I am I will eat my copy of the Nicene Creed.

I think Raptor is over conservative or math challenged though. I would estimate the ratio as much higher.

He edited what his original post said (unsurprisingly) but you can see myself and a few others quoted him so he can't really attempt to weasel out of it

At this point I wouldn't even bother to weasle out of it. I've already gotten my "knock it off and be nice" PM from the mod back then so the cat's pretty much out of the bag.

I fail to see what it being in N&CE has to do with anything. If you want to 'go there' you can PM me, I'm not interested in derailing this thread with you trying to justify those words (as if there is a way to justify them). The topic of that thread is completely irrelevant to that comment and this discussion anyway. I'm actually very disappointed you ever made it as otherwise you've said some pretty intelligent things, I'm just not inclined to forget hateful and needless insults towards good people
