i am in no way against modifying the human species, i am a pretty strong transhumanist myself.
i just dont think focusing on removing negative traits are the way to go, in biology adversity does make strong(to an extent and to the situation at hand)
if we focus more on actually improving the aspects we "know" to be important, i think we can eliminate many of our limitations in the process.

to be honest i would even consider foregoing the biology and using "artificial" alternatives.
MIT is doing some very promising research on neural uploading for an example.

but back to the eugenics question, doesnt it actually mean killing off unwanted genes so only the strong survive?

Sorry to go slightly OT, but I think that Neural Uploading is really unlikely to pan out. We don't know what consciousness is, or if it only works in particular biological structures. Worse of all , there is no way possible of identifying if anything is actually conscious (the problem of other minds). And computers crash and die as quick as humans, so they are no path to immortality.

I agree. I also find the idea of somebody downloading my memories Orwellian as f**k. Not that I get up to anything bad, but who knows, maybe they can 'edit' your memories, make you look like a criminal, etc etc... Hm, I should write a short story.

I didn't think of that :) I'd rewrite my life to be lived from the perspective of Jessica Alba's G - String

the only reason i think its possible is beause they literally simulate the neurons individually in the pattern of the brain in question.
i find the belief of a human "mind" very complex, in no way am i saying we know wnough to say it will work or not, but there has been some sucess in simulating less advanced systems (earthworms and they are currently working on mice)

as for crashing, true it isnt a way to imortality, but i think it will be easier to fix any problems that might arise and backup systems today can be made ridicoulously redundant.

sorry for the off topic, i did it again it seems :?

I imagine the infomation processing part isn't too difficult. I bet C.elegans nervous system could be perfectly modeled (look up artificial neuron :)). But we would have no way of knowing if the PC had any subjective experience (I'm sounding like a f*****g vitalist here, but it's a legit point in non-biological cases)

I doubt the reasons you give as that plausible. The reason I say this is because unless biology has some really super-special trait that can't be reduced to a logical schematic(which makes it different than much of physics), which I doubt it does, then I don't think that the problems you give are reasonable to hold.

At the same time, I really think you are right, but for a different reason. I think that structure would *have* to be in the logical structure which could be replicated. I just doubt that we could be good enough at replicating this complex structure using a different format. We'd have to have a translation process, and the difficulty of this would be ENORMOUS.

Eugenics - popular in Oregon.

Seriously, between the moneyed classes, the black market, the cyclical trends of history, and the Simpson - Sampson effects, the idiots who try to make eugenics work are more to be feared than the predictable outcomes.

Aspies are in the long run at least as safe under eugenics as in this so free Green Monkey society
