General rule about people claiming an exact date...

He's right. If the end of the world doesn't occur tomorrow, then this will prove that the Atheists are correct.

Along with the vast majority of theists, who either think this is garbage (First World) or are too busy trying to find food in a rotting heap (Third World).

Actually, Mr. Campy probably wanted to make a pile of money all at once, and then get out of the business, with something of a bang.

Others preachers continue with the line that "no-one knows the date", so that they can go on collecting your tithes over a longer time frame.

As for blaming Mr. Campy for the "eternal destinies" of people he disillusioned--well, yeah, he is a fraud. But so is the Pope. People have to take charge of their own "eternal destinies." To some extent, it is their own fault for allowing themselves to be defrauded. Hopefully they've learned a lesson from this.

That lesson being: Atheism is where it's at.

Wrong. My Mother's preacher has made it clear that sinners will leave and go into distruction at any unpredicted date, because nobody is supposed to know. Only the holy minority will remain behind to clean up the mess.

Well,, actually, according to the Bible (in Matthew, Mark, and Revelation), there's supposed to be a thousand-year period in which Satan gets to run the world (Revelation goes into a fair bit of detail regarding this), then those who remained faithful (both living and martyred) get drawn up bodily into Heaven, as everyone else is thrown into the Lake of Fire along with Satan. (Apparently Satan's job has been subject to mission creep; as recently as Job, his basic job was to examine the Creation, trying to find flaws in it. Now he gets to lead a failed rebellion!)

Feel free to correct your mother's preacher, although if you do I'd recommend looking up the relevant passages first so you can quote them at him...

Well, why don't the "reputable" preachers put it on the line and specify a date? Because, they don't want to admit that they don't know what they're talking about, either. If they did, then donations would dry up.

Because any of them which have studied the topic as to when Christ will return would know that such day is unknown to anyone except God the Father. The only people making claims of dates are, by default, disreputable, although it is not a singular criterion of dis-reputability as there are many other ways that a person can be wrong other than whether they invent dates and times they cannot know and that God promised nobody here would know.

That old fraud has since said that he misunderstood scripture. Actually, we have been in the period of judgment since the 21st, and the actual rapture will take place in October. :lol:
The problem with the evangelical branch of Christianity is that they are obsessed with the future - Christ's 1,000 year rule and the rapture sometime in the "future," rather than holding to Christ's kingdom in the here and now, with all the benefits of his grace and salvation already available to us.
At least, that's the theology we in mainline churches believe in.

Only as far as evangelical stereotypes of mainline churches goes. Trust me, I've heard plenty of sermons condemning sin in my church. But the fact remains, proclaiming the salvation guaranteed by Christ's death and resurrection is far more important than ranting about "the gay agenda," or the evils of feminism that you'll find in evangelical circles.
