Serious answer: If you think of "Knight Templar" as a vocation, in the sense that "Arsonist" is a vocation, if there were a real increase in people who believe that being an arsonist is great, that would be worrying. Same goes for self-styled templars.

Right, like self-styled shoguns. Typically the feds respond to that with a RICO.

But Breivik is a lunatic, and the drug runners are just drug runners looking for a cool name.

Hopefully the video I saw was just a local mental-glitch somewhere, its one thing to have nuts and its another to see indirect suggestion that larger organizations wish to nurture a small occurrence or even push it from behind into a movement for their own use. Like I said early on though this thread was a little knee-jerk, if there was any possibility of that they likely wouldn't be so bold with public tell as such.

I researched it a little further, and can provide more specifics on what Farreed was referring to in the Video in stating that Breivik was part of a larger movement. There are right wing populist groups in europe that use internet sources to fuel hatred against the Muslim population. One of the loosely organized groups is called the Ancient Order of the Templar Knights in Malta. The leader Paul Ray denies a tie with Breivik, but Breivik described him as his mentor as reported by other sources to the AP.

This group uses the name Templar Knights, but they are not part of the actual order of Templar Knights anymore than Breivik, or the Mexican Cartel that has hijacked the name. Zarreed was not suggesting a resurgence of the actual Templar knights only that Breivik was part of a larger group that wanted to resurrect a crusade, which as been the ideology of this group as it exists and other groups in Europe. This information has been reported by AP sources, so it is factual. There is no exagerration in Fareed's report, it is backed up the report from the AP.

.
Here is the specific passage in the Video that I think is causing some confusion.

Quote:
Anders Breivik's fascination with the Knights is less bizarre - in fact, he's part of a larger movement. People like Breivik are trying to resurrect the idea of a modern-day Crusade, a real clash of civilizations against what they see as an Islamic invasion of Europe.

Here is an excerpt from the report from AP on Paul Ray, Breiviks alleged mentor:

http://www.abc12.com/story/15157132/ap-exclusive-knight-templar-says-no-norway-link?clienttype=printable

Quote:
Ray said his group was set up in response to "Muslims in (England) trying to take over our country. Let's not pretend it's not happening. They are actively declaring their vision to take our country over."

"Me being a Christian, I do look towards the Templars throughout history and how they've defended us from the jihad," he said.

The medieval-era Knights Templar was a Christian military order founded in the early 12th century whose members, wearing white mantles with a red cross, became one of the most formidable fighting forces of the Crusades. It was dissolved in 1312.

The modern Knights Templar have widespread company across Europe in their Islam-bashing beliefs. France's National Front, Austria's Freedom Party, Finland's True Finns, Holland's Party of Freedom have all caused alarm with a xenophobic message that has been attracting growing support in mainstream society.

Ray said he fled England two years ago after being arrested for stirring up racial hatred, and settled in Malta — an island where a different group of Crusaders, the Knights Hospitalier, withstood a three-year Ottoman siege in the 16th century. That history is still very much bound up in Malta's identity and landscape.

In a video made available to AP, Ray is seen walking around Malta's walled medieval town of Mdina with a friend, both wearing white hooded sweat shirts bearing the logo AOKT — Ancient Order of Knights Templar — and the red cross commonly used by the original religious group in the Middle Ages.

"It's a historic fact when we look back to the Knights, they all traveled to the Holy Land," Ray said. "We don't have to travel to the Holy Land to protect Christianity because Christianity is under attack in our own countries."

Does the Video make more sense now, in context with the actual movement that mirrors Breivik's ideology for the resurrection of a crusade against the Muslim population?

Unless that particular group in Malta has grown bigger than a few hundred I'd say its still a preemptive call to publicity which IMO will likely do much more to get people interested in a movement that barely qualifies for marginal at the moment.

I just watched a video from Fareed Zakaria, raising the question that between the Norway gunman and a few comics in Mexico who have a Knights Templar cartel that we're possibly seeing a resurgence of the once hidden and underground group.

I'm really confused, especially when someone who's a touted thinker who writes best sellers on economics gets on video and starts spouting tabloid stuff. I don't get it and I start worrying when people like that go way out on a limb (the odds of actually predicting that and being right are about 1 in 1000 - *unless* you happen to know that a few friends in high places will be orchestrating some kind of scare).

Does anyone have any idea what he or 'they' are up to with this?

The knights templar, despite what you might have read out of a Dan Brown Novel, is really just one of the most progressive trade organizations ever. They operated outside the jurisdiction of any single kingdom, they were masters of trade especially considering they didn't have to pay taxes - because they simply refused and no one would mess with them.

The Freemasons were not a branch of the Knights Templar.

They had some involvement in history centuries ago during that time of the revolutions in the American continent but nowadays they are a social club.

Fareed was not just referring to the one particular group that uses the branding of the Knights of Templar, he was referring to the whole movement in Europe against the Muslim population. The other groups as referenced in the AP article, have thousands that share alliance in similar ideology that don't use the Knights of Templar as a symbol for organizational unity.

The main purpose of the video was to explain what the Knights of Templar as a historical organization and fictional organization have been in culture, since it's back in the news after the presentation of it in the fictional work the DaVinci Code, and that there are people abusing the brand name for purposes farther and closer to the original purpose of the historical order of the Knights of Templar.

The larger point, though, presented in the video was that all of the focus should not be on Muslim Terrorism as the only radical threat to be concerned with in Europe. It is clearly evidenced by the statistics on Terrorism there, as presented in the video, in the last couple of years.

It has been reported, that government authorities in Europe are paying closer attention to the whole movement against Muslims in Europe, as a result of the Breivik incident.

Copy cat activity of illegal activity presented on the news is a common phenomenon, so your point is valid that some may hear of this, that haven't heard of it, and want to participate in the nefarious activities presented. However as in all news reports, public awareness of what is going on in the world takes precedence over potential copy cat activity.

I disagree though that the movement in Europe against Muslims is a marginal issue, even the loosely organized one that it was reported that Breivik may have had direct ties to. Breivik is not the only one crazy enough to act violently upon an ideology shared by thousands, regardless of what brand name is used as a motivating force within each organization that shares that ideology. None of these people are actual knights of any kind, they share a vehement belief that Muslims shouldn't be allowed in their countries.

Much of the fear of Islam is based on the large violent terrorist acts associated with radical Muslim Ideology and associated political motives. As polled by Gallup 90% of people in the heaviest populated Muslim countries, do not believe that acts of terrorism against innocent people are warranted within their religious ideology.

The ideology has been expressed here by some of the those that represent themselves as the most logical of people, here on this site, that the world won't be safe as long as there are any Muslims in it. The facts don't match the opinion.

It's not likely that emotion based opinions will change much with the facts, but I think it is responsible reporting to provide an understanding to the public that the actual results of Muslim Terrorism in the European countries as a whole, are not the only realistic terrorist concern to focus on there. If only a few opinions are changed by the facts, I see at as a worthwhile reporting endeavor.

Are you serious?

The Knights Templer became the Freemasons only in the mind of Dan Brown when he dreamed up his novle "the Davinci Code" It has nothing to do with real history. The two groups have no proven connection.

Saying something is "out of character" for the Knights Templer is like saying something is "out of character" for pixies and elves. You speak of these nonexistant conspiratorial cabals as if they are real.

He might of meant the same thing that I was hearing from talk radio at the time - obvious furor with his stupidity and a stain its laid on the right but the added sign of his lunacy that he was angry about Muslim occupation and rather than trying to rally for rights against blasphemy laws or forced tolerances regarding alcohol (perhaps be the Rosa Parks of the taxi world) he decided to kill lots of Norwegians - which makes perfect sense.
