The Jante Law totally prohibits things that are fun.

Makes sense to me. I can also see that in Australian rural communities. I think it could survive in cities, as I recall a theory from uni (I forget whose it was) that said that migrant take on the qualities/nature of the original people. So changing a country's character takes many generations, even when there is large migration (as we have had), so our "tall poppy syndrome" continues.

Can any Americans say whether any of the more rural States (say Wyoming ?) has similar traits? :?

What happened to the Vikings (at least the Viking spirit? Surely they knew how to party.

My wife is Scottish - she says all the Scots with any fighting spirit left. Did Viking spirit likewise decamp? Does Jantes Law apply in Iceland too?

The Viking spirit left with christianity. It's not a "law" only for Scandinavians. It exists worldwide, though it's called other things or expressed differently. But, as Malaclypse pointed out, the Viking spirit is not dead, only suppressed. You can see that every weekend in any Swedish bar or look at Swedes on holiday in southern countries...

Restraint and moderation are the key principles that seperate Epicureanism from Hedonism.

If hedonism is not at other's expense, and to a minimum of yours, is it Epicurianism?

Oh.

Remind me not to piss off a Swede in person. I don't want a potential "beserker" going all "axe-in-head" on my axehole.

Not nessecarily, Epicurus philosophy was based on the notion of the pursuit of pleasure though largely spiritual means. He felt that indulgence in physical pleasure merely masked pain. He argued that learnng to enjoy simple pleasures in moderate amounts produced the greatest pleasure. (kind of like if you get drunk all the time, it takes a lot of alcohol and you don't enjoy it as much. drink small amounts on occasion, and you will both enjoy it more, and look forward to the next time.)
