Do you have to be religous to go to Heaven?

I have a theory that the brain has a 'death mode' - which is a kind of video it plays for you as the lights in your brain switch off. This video generally involves seeing lights and moving towards them and feeling serene. Also, something might happen to the way your brain perceives time, which would make this NDE seem to go on for a very long time; so you get a slice of eternity. That's if you don't get shot in the head or blown to smithereens.

This is the closest I can get to believing in heaven.

I've had many near death experiences from epilepsy (the least nice one was when ER told me I had about 3 hours to live without emergency surgery by a distant neurosurgeon).

Some of the sensations of divine bliss with temporal lobe seizures were much stronger than any strong dose of tinctures of opium (one Dr. tried to stop my bout with epigastric-like seizures with opiates in 1972, that didn't work). Many Near Death Experiences (NDE) descriptions come the closest in describing very pleasant seizure experiences. Attempts of explaining the mechanisms of NDE often cite Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) as providing clues to the chemical mechanisms involved, and the often after-effects (are there withdrawal effects from TLE similar to opiates???); many of these attempts contradict each other, and often also use opposing terminologies. Some of the books I've looked at are:

Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology For The 21st Century, by Edward F. Kelly, Emily Williams Kelly, 2006, they're more critical about Dostoevsky's "The Idiot" and Dostoevsky's type of epilepsy.

Anyone who's expecting to go to heaven has a big shock coming.
Religion is the biggest con and fairy story ever invented.

You don't believe me?

Then ask the Pope and every other religious leader to empty their palaces of gold and give it to the poor and see what answer you get.

Do you really think that the higher ups in their pomp and finery believe in god?

In fact Pat is the only person in the whole world who hates religion more than I do.

I personally feel that Heaven is what God gives you for being a good person. And Hell is what you get for being bad. And I don't think that following one of the wrong religions, or no religion at all, automatically makes you a bad person.
I think that in the world, there are only good people who do good things, and bad people who do bad things, like what they say in My Name Is Khan. And I think that while there are people who we may decide are bad people (like Osama Bin Laden, Anders Behring Breivik, Muammar Gaddafi, etc.), I think that only God knows who is truly good and truly bad. Bin Laden and Gaddafi may be dead now, but weather they went to Heaven or Hell, I'm not going to decide. In my eyes, they may have been bad people, but I think only God knows weather they were truly bad or not. And I think the same goes for Breivik too.
I think that the only benefit of following the right religion (which, in my view, is Christianity*) is because it makes God feel happy. And I don't think that one sin instantly makes you a bad person. We all have sins, but God has mercy and he does forgive people. God's cool, and he understands us all. It really ticks me off when people misinform people about God, and make him sound like some strict evil dictator.
But no, I don't think you'll go to Hell. You sound like a nice person.

Where does "god" go for being bad then? Cause he's the biggest bad ass around. And why do you think atheists go to heaven? Ohh wait, I remember. ALL Christians claim to be devout followers of the bible, then pick and choose what "sounds nice" from it to believe in and ignore the rest. They also see negative things in the bible and choose to believe the exact opposite, ie "only lovers of god can make it into heaven" turns into "all nice people regardless of belief can make it to heaven". Typical. It might sound nice but it also sounds kinda... (well you know) because you're just making stuff up to believe in, and therefore is especially not "right". When you follow a religion it's also technically incorrect to say you're a believer in god if you only choose to believe some of it.
All branches might be similar but they have many conflicting differences too... Obviously none of the branches are "right", if they were, they would all be the same since they all claim to be "close to god".
