Subsidies don't belong in a free market, so they should definitely be abolished.

That is right. The Oil companies and their ilk have been treating their damage as externalities. They should be compelled to pay for the damage they do. If that were done the true price of oil that includes the environmental damage would make alternative energy sources more economical.
