Like everyone else (even you, Jews, admit it), I used to think the story behind Chanukkah was pretty lame, as far as miracles go. But given international politics over the last couple of decades, I'd have to say that stretching out oil reserves seems far more compelling than a pregnant virgin at this point


Taken literally it IS lame. But it is a point of departure for remembering a struggle for religious freedom by a people that was out-sworded, out-speared and and out-shielded. The Selucids learned the hard way: Don't f**k with the Jews especially on their own turn.
