But I agree with Delaney that though Gypsies were ( and continue to be) the horribly treated N-word's of Eastern Europe they get relatively little discrimination in america. So there is little need for them be acknowleded as a seperate group on those school forms that Uncle Sam makes school kids fill out.

If your folks were Gypsies from say Finland (like Yul Brynner) youll just have to consider yourself Finnish , and check off "White".

they're from sicily and iran

I recognize the Romani (Gypsies) every time I see one in a police line-up.

I'm not saying that all Romani are involved in illegal activities; nor am I saying that I see them in every police line up.

just most of them, right?

i think that government questionaires are too limited when they ask for such information and it can offend too. when the government specifies ethnicities (sometimes it forgets the line between race/ethnicity) i would guess that it does so because it is basing the list of choices on what the most common groups in society are. and you are asked to pick only 2 options. i think this is an offensive way to conduct things. it denies that the country is more multicultural than a list of 6 and by listing some ethnicities and lumping everyone else into "other" it creates a heirarchy- those worth mentioning and the rest of us who are invisible. plus its just more effort for me to write "lebanese" into forms than it is to cross a box(what can i say, im a sloth). everyone should just write what they are. then we can be all equally put out. the fact that you have to choose 2 only is silly. there was a girl in my highschool class whose parents each had 2 different backgrounds. how does she fill in her census form?

There's still quite a bit of bitterness between some English and some Scottish people, and that has been known to lead to physical attacks - random or otherwise - mainly on English people. Some of the Scots can be very anti-English but most of them are fine. :)

Surely you'd have to be a German or Scottish emigré to the United States to really qualify for that? Else you're just American. :)

I think Romani are just so rare in the United States. I think they would probably fall into the 'White' category.

Organized societies. -.- They usually want to be recognized, as doing so can bring them advantages. What if there's no advantage to identify oneself as Romani? =/

Most of the Rom I know consider themselves Caucasian. You could check "other" and then fill in Romani, or be even more specific and write Kalderdash, Lowara, Siti, etc.

Then again, people confuse Irish Travellers with Romani because the Travellers are also called Gypsies, and they are a different ethnic group.

There are plenty of Romani in the US, just look at the number of Romani Protestant churches, and also the number of Catholic and Orthodox churches who say a Sunday Mass in a Romani language. It really depends on where you go. Some Romani that I know do not want to tell people their ethnicity because of incorrect stereotypes, and they pass for something else. It really depends on where you live.
