My mother was real into genealogy 10-15 years ago and was able to trace my grandmother's side of the family all the way back to a village in the Netherlands called Westbroek. My great whatever grandfather came over here sometime in the 1600s and was like an architect or something. He had abandoned his wife and kids back in the Netherlands and apparently got in trouble for it somehow so they sent his wife and kids to him in what would now be New York.

My mom did everything in between as well and basically collected a book's worth of information on it.

From that moment on, as that ancestor is officially known (most people can't tell for certain, but if you're European, it's very likely he's one of your ancestors, too), it's easy to just read Wikipedia to find earlier ancestors.

Not everyone here comes from a country that is only a few years old.

Personally, I know my ancestry back to 1066. If you travel around the balkans & other parts of europe 1200-1500 years of family connection with the same property is fairly common.

UK (where we originate from) is not only a few years old. But registries didn't exist at all before the 1700s, and were uncommon until the 1800s.

There are, of course, family legends. We had a few - which were promptly revealed to be rather fanciful when we started doing the actual genealogy. Like the idea that the first one to come over had fought for Bonnie Prince Charles and fled to North America afterwards. Romantic nonsense. Simply no chance of that, it looks like he got a land grant from the Crown and he seems to have had a leg injury so chances are, he probably served against Charles.

Yeah I know but most people in America know very little about other countries that ironically their family tree came from one of them at least.

I wish I knew as much about my family history as some of the people here... All I know is that my father was born in Romania and lived there with his family until he was four, and my mum's parents are both from Morocco.
