What if they gave a war, and only one side came, and the other didn't, and then the first decided they'd just go on a death march?

Also, I do believe Aspergers Syndrome is one of the conditions that will cause you to get rejected from the military.

I support the draft.

George Bush has two daughters in their twenties. He says that whatever the hell he's trying to accomplish in Iraq is worth the cost. Who's paying that cost? Are his own kids over there? Are they even in the military? Hell no. That's what poor people are for; so rich people can start wars and their kids can party while poor people get their legs blown off and get killed.

Next time him and all his butt buddies want to start a war, let's send their kids first.

Right, no, I am just commenting on it because I think that there are actually some people who think that the world can really work like that. There are hardcore pacifists out there and I just wanted to make sure you weren't one of them, they hate freedom after all . Freedom isn't free, it costs 8 easy payments of $19.99 plus shipping and handling.

Isnt it amazing that people could be so naive? To quote family guy "You cant hug children with nuclear arms!" gah.

how about 'US require mandatory aid service of citizens'

where u would get paid etc....for going somewhere in the world or stay in the U.S and do care work for the poverty stricken or help the earth in some way etc....

from all the positive energy/karma/grace/good will this would generate around the globe....u wouldn't need a military anymore!!

and! there is also virtual reality for those 'adults' who just must blow stuff up :)
really it effects the same emotions....military folk try it out...it will be just as good as killing real civilians!

Nations act an awful lot like the individual humans they're made up of.

Contrary to what they told you in kindergarten, people won't like you, and respect you, and leave you alone just because you're nice all the time.

atm i disagree...(about the nations bit)

i think individuals by themselves are the MOST likely to act in a way that exemplifies the best qualities in humans....while the bigger group of humans u get together....the worse behaviour u'll get... (talking about when faced with a situation etc) ie. (im not religious currently(more believe in a universal factor drawing us towards novelty ala Terence Mckenna)...but just observations... personal god = calm person, organised god = crusading bunch of madmen with pitchforks)

agreeing with u on the nice stuff definately....i am on a diet of this video once a day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr3x_RRJdd4 and stories such as below....so as to preserve whatever human spirit i have left...not to say i wouldnt be like the passerby....sigh

One morning, after he had finished his meditation, the old man opened his eyes and saw a scorpion floating helplessly in
the water. As the scorpion was washed closer to the tree, the old man quickly stretched himself out on one of the long
roots that branched out into the river and reached out to rescue the drowning creature. As soon as he touched it, the
scorpion stung him. Instinctively the man withdrew his hand. A minute later, after he had regained his balance, he
stretched himself out again on the roots to save the scorpion. This time the scorpion stung him so badly with its
poisonous tail that his hand became swollen and bloody and his face contorted with pain.

At that moment, a passerby saw the old man stretched out on the roots struggling with the scorpion and shouted: "Hey,
stupid old man, what's wrong with you? Only a fool would risk his life for the sake of an ugly, evil creature. Don't you
know you could kill yourself trying to save that ungrateful scorpion?"

The old man turned his head. Looking into the stranger's eyes he said calmly, "My friend, just because it is the scorpion's
nature to sting, that does not change my nature to save."

Ok, i know it's been discussed about compulsory Military service but i thought they BANNED those with Asperger's Syndrome form serving in the military in ANY capacity. so this thread is kind of moot due to the simple fact that NONE of us would be able to serve.

The military draft is involuntary servitude which is outlawed by the 13th Amendment.

The thread is 6 and a half years old, the politics that produced the thread are no longer active.

Mandatory public service, yes. Military service could be one option among many (Peace Corps, volunteering for nonprofit agencies, etc.).

Some people just arent fit for military service and would be more of a liability than an asset.
A major war when we must have people would be different; draft them the sort them out.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me about the capitalist system is that during times of 'austerity' or economic stagnancy it gets away with saying 'sorry there is no work available' and then during other times, such as times of conscription, war or in this country 'workfare' it is able to pull employment out of thin air. The real war is not against other countries, it should be against the ideology of artificial scarcity.

Fortunately, at least in the long term, the capitalist world system (as Immanuel Wallerstein calls it) is unraveling. Marx's prediction is being fulfilled - though not exactly as he imagined it to happen.

It's only being fulfilled by design.

The people driving the US economy are embracing Marxist ideology...deliberately making existing problems worse so that there is friction that will lead to revolution. America avoided a need for a workers revolution by having things in place that enabled a capitalist system to be balanced with social needs. All that is being thrown in the trash, and it's not your corner capitalist who is behind it happening...it's those who will be holding the power when it all comes crashing down.
