This is a gross generalization. There are some pagan groups that rely on history, some that rely on oral tradition, and some that do not rely on either.

The term Pagan used to mean country dweller or meant that anyone whom didn't follow the Abrahamic religion was pagan. These days you can be a spiritual person that is connecting with nature and celebrate changes of the seasons and the moon cycle and be pagan without practicing magik, mostly wiccans do spells more often then pagans but pagans normally do a ritual during a sabbbat but normally with these religions, it's all eclectic and you practice, what rings true for you! theirs no rules in paganism like their is in Christianity, you don't need to be religious only spiritual.
