Ashkenazi Jews are, on average, the smartest group of people on the planet as measred by the IQ scale. There are flaws with this scale, but it does have some correlation with reality.

What you're describing refers to cultural values coupled with a tradition of insular networking. Jews coming to the U.S. traditionally emigrated as urban settlers, with, with strong scholarly traditions, and cultural tradition of involvement in particular professional pursuits... combined with the strong sense of a historically oppressed people of "keeping to their own" and "circling the wagons" as it were. These factors combined to make Jews highly successful and highly represented in particular areas of life in America.

A great deal of Jewish success in America does have to do with culture; love and respect of learning goes a long way in an economy where learning is prized.

As a contrast, take the huge number of other European immigrants came with an interest of escaping tyranny, owning their own land, not being under anyone's thumb etc., as they had been in their home countries, and they settled westward in specifically agrarian, backwoods and non urban contexts. These people were not "stupid"--but their values and life choices would not lead them to likely become professors, scientists, financial-sector workers, etc.

Jews frequently fled from tyrrany on their way to the US as well; part of the reason that they did not have a culture that prized land and farming was that they were not allowed to own land in many of the areas of Europe that they came from.

Quote:
There are no "smart peoples" vs "stupid peoples". This is a total myth. There are just "people". Everyone has inestimable intrinsic value. These differences you speak of are products of the environment into which the person is born.

This is incorrect. While environment can shift a person's IQ quite a bit in one direction or the other on the IQ scale, there is a certain degree of inborn talent, or lack thereof, in some people. For example, a person with Down's syndrome is unlikely to ever learn calculus regardless of the environment he grows up in; baring some sort of brain injury, a person with natural intelligence is unlikely to reach adulthood illiterate.

Quote:
This is a good example of why wild income stratification is unethical, and unjustifiable. The kid who is born into a family of lawyers who becomes a lawyer, is no greater intrinsic worth or validity than the kid born into a family of farmers who becomes a farmer. One does not "work harder" than the other. The differences are not qualitative, or matters of personal worth or ranking. Everyone deserves respect, dignity, humane living conditions, and a decent standard of living.

While it is true that neither works harder than the other - indeed, the farmer can be said to work harder than the lawyer, even given exactly equal hours spent at labor - it is not fair to dismiss the investment one person puts into learning a trade that another person does not. Such dismissal would be akin to saying that a cobbler who sets up shop on a street corner after a drunken decision the night before should be paid as much for his shoes as a cobbler who has been learning his trade for two decades. In addition, some talents are rarer than others; while the intrinsic 'worth' to society of a world-class football player probably isn't as much as the intrinsic worth of said farmer, world-class football players are considerably rarer than good farmers.
It's true that all work should be respected, and no one should have to work so much that they have no time for anyting else, but pretending that all work is equal is just unfair.

^Some good points, but you essentially have to realize at some point that pedantic racism isn't a ticket to success. One really has an obligation to be fair, broad, and farsighted, when dealing with such topics, and matters along these lines. I also offer this advise from the standpoint of one's own self-interest as much as anything else.

One needs to realize "IQ tests" are a particular subjective and culturally biased metric, nothing more. This is NOT a metric indicating anythign like net intelligence. Sorry to burst any bubbles on this point. Were I making a point on the basis of self-interest and juvenile boasting I would be offering otherwise, as my own IQ scores are rather high. However one has to have a degree of sense, perspective and humility about such things. We are Aspies here. Who are we trying to impress? You don't impress me because you are an Aspie and have a "high IQ". And vice versa--I don't want to be an insecure dick and try to impress people with these things either. I am who I am--not through any "special gifts" but just because that's the way it is. Same thing for EVERY OTHER PERSON. Let me assure you: You have nothing to prove to me. Let me assure you as well: I have nothing to prove to you. I'm interested in building ideas and productive conversations with people. Likewise, I dismiss things that are counterproductive, shortsighted, or irrelevant. That's why I joined this site in the first place: Conversations about things that matter, and that make a difference for people in the world. The subject line of this thread was outlandish. Hassidic Jews scoring very well on IQ tests and as a result being identified as "a smart ethnic group" is kind of insulting to the intelligence of everyone, and something that is very shortsighted and unworthy.

My 2 cents. You sound like an interesting person--don't take personally. Not intended in that way.

One does indeed have an obligation to be fair, but being fair does not mean ignoring the topic altogether.

No bubbles burst; you are simply incorrect. While the IQ test is biased enough to be worthless when comparing people from, say the USA with people from the African continent, it does have some validity when comparing people of similar socioeconomic levels within the US. Thus, comparing a white Jew raised in the US to a white Protestant raised in the US, by the IQ test, is not entirely invalid.

I'm not trying to impress anyone - I'm not Jewish. I am, however, trained as a biologist, and have a particular interest in evolutionary biology; it is in that context that I responded to this thread.

...Especially because the hassidic aren't an ethnic group within the Jewish family; Hassidism is a type of worship, not so much a group of people. It's analagous to, say, Baptists in Christianity. OTOH, the previously mentioned Ashkenazi Jews have a disproportionate number of technical 'geniuses' in their ranks.

Nothing you have said thus far has sounded like a personal insult to me, though clearly we disagree strongly on some points.

edit: please note that I'm not making claims about IQ being the only, much less the most important, factor that makes up a personality. It has some utility, but as we Aspies know better than the average person, IQ alone does not necessarily make for success or happiness in this world.

^Ha! It never ceases to amaze me how much glee insecure people take from ridiculously trying to patronizing others whose ideas they are unprepared to have to think about, throwing up red herrings, straw men... or donuts if that will distract attention from what has been said. "Who do you imagine you're talking to? Who are you trying to impress?" Was this not the entire point of my previous post? Amazing to see that it has gone above heads. Actually I give you more credit than that--I can't in good conscience play these same patronizing games. They don't do that much for me personally. Thanks for the chuckle on the topic of human psychology though, I needed that :)

edit: Maybe I did not make it sufficiently clear that, in the perspective I'm presenting, I am specifically rejecting IQ test scores as an objective measure of holistic or net intelligences. They are a particular metric with a particular purpose. This purpose is quite narrow and limited, and they measure very particular thing that is not essentially relevant to the points I"m making here. This is neither how the thread was orignially framed, nor how I addressed it--or wished to switch to addressing it at any later point. I was remiss in not making this less ambiguous.

For the record, let it be pointed out that LKL is the only person on this thread to make an issue and a debating point of "IQ test scores".

Maybe we could now return to the actual topic presented, with the breadth and scope in which it was originally offered., instead of trying to disparagingly reframe particular responses subjectively and artificially along those lines after-the-fact?

Kate Beckinsale. I'm a sucker for her complexion, it's just perfect.

What? Maybe you are truly that much smarter than me, because this makes no sense to me in the context of this discussion. Also, I take back what I previously said about you not being insulting.

Quote:

No, I think you made that clear; I agree that it has nothing to do with 'holistic' intelligence, or with multiple intelligences, but that is not the focus of this discussion and the IQ does have utility in measuring learning ability and abstract thinking. It is also the source of Ruveyn's original point.

So, wait... you came into an extant thread, tried to switch it to something else, and then started insulting people (Aspies on an Asperger's forum, no less!) because we perseverated on the original point?

We must not confuse morality with truth. Characteristics in families are inherited height, color, weight etc. So why not intelligence.

How do you account for people with down syndrome. Do you think a person with down syndrome can be a lawyer, if born in a lawyer families?

Do you know that there is a condition called aspergers syndrome that can give people some intelligence advantages. Apparently this condition is inherited.
I have aspergers syndrome. Nobody encouraged me to learn about computers, or technology or to show an interest in science. I hope that one day I will be rich. I stand a better chance then the (average) in the office I work in.

I did not say, "There are no 'smart people' vs 'stupid people'." I said, "There are no 'smart peoples' vs 'stupid peoples'." He was talking about an ethnic/racial group. (Ready for the obligatory patronizing ot begin: I KNOW Judaism is a religion. It is ALSO a cultural identity. And it is ALSO an ethnicity, implying shared genetics. Don't even start on this point, people.)

I know about AS--I have it.

That is more accurate, but still probably not entirely factual. It's probably true that one very heterozygous population is much like another in most characteristics (for example, most of the people who have been Americans for more than a generation or two have multiple ethnicities in their backgrounds), but where there has been some bottlenecking (whether accidental or deliberate), it is possible to separate one group from another.
Of course, saying that group averages differ says virtually nothing about individuals within the group in question.

^I don't know how much clearer I need to be: Your metrics are irrelevant to the points I'm making, or anything I'm talking about on this. If you keep making the same point, I will keep telling you the same thing.

Btw, this was not "more" accurate. This is exactly what I said from the start. "More accurate" implies that I had been saying something different before.

One can be bred to be as intellectually nimble as possible, but history has shown those who have been bred to be physically large and brawny will always be able to squash the intellectually nimble (who usually are small and weak) underfoot.

Scrawny little Jews built a bomb in Los Alamos that wiped out tens of thousands of brawny Japanese..

The brain is mightier than the sword or muscle.

The most intelligent prevail in the long run.
