I think there are three kinds of “respectful” behaviours (and a 4th one).
1. Education: This is the, at least, the basic respect all the acquaintances and unknown people around us deserve, because we are in a civilized world and we have to be kind and nice to coexist with our neighbours. Well, if they are stupid, then you have more leeway.
2. Love: You love people (partner, family, friends) and you take care of them and want them to be happy. This is the next level in the “respect scale”.
3. Admiration: Next scale is for the admirable people. You give them a lot of respect because well, you admire them and want to learn from them. They can be partners, members of your family, friends, literary/scientific/whatever figures…
4. Too much: You know, maybe a lot of reverences can be interpreted as submissiveness
