Actually- they invented guns to knock down castle walls.
Theyre better than catapaults.

Big guns came first- big humongous guns for shooting big heavier than a man solid balls of stone or iron at fortifications.

Small portable guns were an afterthought.

And the guys who wielded small hand held guns had to hold the match to the fuse with one hand while holding the gun itsself with the other. So it was impossible to aim. So small guns were a joke on the battlefield- less effective than bows.

Then one day some guy invented a trigger- you could aim- maintain your aim while you pull the trigger- and the smoldering match came down on the portal to the powder in the gun barrel- so you could keep aiming AND shoot.

That made small guns deadlier than long bows. And the era of small guns began.

Because the Asgard beam weapons are useless against Replicators, and the thought of using chemical propellants to impart kinetic energy to a slug of blunt lead simply never occurred to them.

But the Replicator Disruptor Cannon worked well enough to defeat them (too bad Fifth got away when they were fighting the Replicators on Orilla -- luckily for us, he eventually dies in the episode "Gemini")...

The difference between most firearms and a tool like a hammer, a nail-gun, a screwdriver, an extension cord: a firearm is a weapon, deliberately designed to impart a significant portion of energy on a target, likely for the purpose of disabling, de-life-ing, or destroying a target. Incidentally, about the same as the spear, the bow-and-arrow, the trebuchet, and a number of other weapons.

My viewpoint: I admire the craftmanship involved in weapons, and the skills in utilizing them effectiely. I even went through the trouble to train in the use of several of them. Thing is, I hate what they represent: man's potential to inflict harm upon man.

To the OP: you could outlaw guns, but humans keep finding reasons to go around stakeing other humans, beating other humans, electrocuting other humans, drowning other humans, strangling other humans, stoneing other humans, etc. Just as they have for the thousands of years before there were guns, except for the electrocution bit of course. Regrettably, yourself and myself are not members of the nicest species on Earth.
