The difference between most firearms and a tool like a hammer, a nail-gun, a screwdriver, an extension cord: a firearm is a weapon, deliberately designed to impart a significant portion of energy on a target, likely for the purpose of disabling, de-life-ing, or destroying a target. Incidentally, about the same as the spear, the bow-and-arrow, the trebuchet, and a number of other weapons.
My viewpoint: I admire the craftmanship involved in weapons, and the skills in utilizing them effectiely. I even went through the trouble to train in the use of several of them. Thing is, I hate what they represent: man's potential to inflict harm upon man.
To the OP: you could outlaw guns, but humans keep finding reasons to go around stakeing other humans, beating other humans, electrocuting other humans, drowning other humans, strangling other humans, stoneing other humans, etc. Just as they have for the thousands of years before there were guns, except for the electrocution bit of course. Regrettably, yourself and myself are not members of the nicest species on Earth.
