where i was going with the "no metaphysical metaphysics" was that i actually completely agree on the brain being solely "a physical representation of the mind and not the mind itself", thats why i would call it a metaphysical level.
there is a very simple example to illustrate what i mean by that - the color red doesnt exist anywhere in the whole material universe. there might be a bunch of photons with certain properties and there might be matter with certain properties, but there is no red. red is what we see when we see an object reflecting light of a certain wavelength, but it is only in our mind and only valid in our mind just like all the hate and love and fuss. those are qualities that go beyond physics, so the mind or consciousness (which are really synonymes to me) is true metaphysics, but it is not metaphysical in the sense that it does not go beyond physics by being independent of it. without the brain there are no neural networks so there is no material encoding and decoding of information so there is no information. no hardware - no software - no data if you will.

Right, and I think up to that point even under a pure reductive materialist rubric that still works. Where Seth (already - speaking through Jane Roberts as an electrical energy presence) departs is the claim that the physical reality, seeming labyrinthianly complex, steadfast down until we get to quanta, is still an incredibly small subset of some small spot out in podunk (our physical universe as we know it) and that we already - simultaneously - participate in many other...geez...univi?....that support energetic life in such ways where the root assumptions such as our almost unbreakable Newtonian macro-level stability - largely go out the window. He highlights the dream world as our closest relateable example, as being as real or valid as the physical world we know but where the assumptions are different enough and likely full memory of would be so overbearing to our conscious minds and survival instincts that our subconscious filters much if it out for practical reasons.
Another way of saying it would be saying that a reductive materialist sees us as having all the salient teleology that we need at our fingertips right now to rule out spirit, soul, any life before or after, immortality of personhood, higher dimensions, ascended masters, etc. etc. whereas someone more in like with Seth's teachings, theosophy, or anything along those lines is saying "Well, we agree that what you're seeing is what you're seeing but....its 1% or 1% of 1% of......." let that go for quite a long time.

as you might have noticed im far out on the scientism side of things and consciousness is rather a secondary and somewhat accidental product of the physical world to me, something that by definition only makes sense when we are talking about information integration in a central nervous system (or an artificial system for that matter). therefor i find the concept of rudimentary consciousness on the subatomic level (are you tieing this to the "choice" of one possible outcome out of many despite identical conditions and the sum of choices forming a pattern or did i just not get that at all?) or any sharing or storage of information via nonphysical channels very hard to grasp, let alone thinking of physical reality as a collage of symbols.
The good news is that over the past six months I've been gradually weaning myself off of something similar to the scientistic/reductive materialist perspective. After my trust in coherence of pretty much any organized or historical organized religion collapsed I felt like 'spirituality' was just modern day and manic backpedaling trying to save an old ideology. The only thing I can impart that might be of some use to you in your situation - I had to understand that emprical, retestable evidence in the sense of scientific method is still only a small fraction of what we still can call 'evidence'; for instance science still doesn't do well at weighing anecdote against anecdote or dealing with more fuzzy logic, estimating odds of event A over B in such dirty arenas as mass psychology. I started with finding that I was stumped on the validity of NDE's (ie. anecdotal but recorded evidence that the out of body portions are legitimately out of body), from there I had to look at psychic ability and mediumship as possibilities, from there I did find psychics and mediums who could tell me things about myself on first phone meeting that were of such private nature (like minute health details) as well as other things that would not be pinned to my name on Facebook, Myspace, any sort of debt or asset collection service's database, etc. etc.. No, I have no peer reviewed documents on my experience, nor do I have peer reviewed documents on seeming 'supernatural' (for lack of a better descriptor) events that I was able to find incredibly cogent corroboration with in reality to where, if anything, trying to pin such longshot odds down to random chance couldn't work in intellectual honesty.
Its one of those things I think where if you do thorough research and suspend disbelief long enough to weigh out the evidence, even if you find yourself figuring that there has to be something else to it, that something else (whether the reality of ESP or collective subconscious from a material non-eternal perspective) still ends up going into pretty wild territory and ends up melting a lot of the ideas we have of ourselves as solitary individuals.

the reason why im nevertheless curious is that i have to agree on the limitations of the materialistic perspective, which come into play as soon as we are talking about consciousness, because from that level on there is nothing to investigate by means of true science. this doesnt mean that i would ever kick all my perfectly logical evidence based assumptions and their implications in the bin, it just means that im realising that they can not tell the whole story. and i dont feel a need to agree with things in order to find them interesting, experience tells me that maybe not truth but yet the best ideas are found in weird places. i really appreciate your somewhat deeper introduction to this, although im still struggling with the definition of "consciousness" here and i have a feeling i should read before commenting anything else.
You may in end analysis either agree or disagree with Seth that consciousness is, in and of itself, independent and fundamental. In the book I'm currently reading, which deals with the first months of her communications, Jane herself was still very much in the agnostic/atheistic frame of reference where she still firmly believed that the voice was her subconscious mind bypassing her and she felt ill at ease with any analysis that Seth gave for her husband because she worried that it might have been such well-repressed criticism that she wouldn't even be aware of her own feelings. As time went on they got more corroborating data that steered her away from that assumption but it was incredibly refreshing, for me at least, to read about a medium who started out not even trusting or believing that she was as such.

one more so-so related thing: in my opinion the multiverse idea isnt that nuts at all. i think that a lot of obstacles in modern theoretical physics stemmed from people being unable to wrap their head around why our universe would look exactly like THIS out of the often infinite number of possibilities their theories predicted, so its actually seems like a perfectly sane thing to say, well, maybe all of those possibilities exist and we just get to see this one and not another one, and thats because this one happens to be remarkably stable in some way and to allow matter and elements and galaxies to form which eventually leads to life which eventually leads to consciousness. there is no evidence i know of that would actually suggest it, but from where im standing its definately not madness.
also, just read through the martial arts thread - congrats!

TY on the martial arts
As far as multiverse theory and probabilities - I'm at the point where I'm still suspending disbelief but, admittedly I still don't get it. I still don't undertand the switch that lands the 'me' that I know on traintrack 1 of a 3 outcome decision, nor do I know how that mechanism that lands me on track one doesn't automatically cancel out the true existence of tracks 2 and 3, thus leading us right back to a completely 1 to 1 universe where the past is completely written, the future is completely written, and 'now' is nothing other than the playpoint of the Blu-Ray or DVD with my name on it.
Then again, I think that is the ultimate question everyone has and it would likely take agency of dimensions that, for me to even try comprehending at this point, would land my brain on a hot skillet.

From what I've seen in modus operandi of the universe it seems neither gentlemanly nor ladylike enough to adhere to such reasonable conduct. That's probably why I only find it so surprising that it may well do such a lowbrow thing as speak through mediums.

Seances are great places to meet women, especially those who are gullible enough to believe in "Channeling" -- such women are also gullible enough to believe almost anything you may tell them, especially if it has a woo-woo context.
"Oh yes, your aura has the most beautiful pearly iridescence I have ever scryed."
"Have you met my spirit guide? She says to ask about those recurring headaches of yours."
"How odd ... my second chakra goes into a high-energy state whenever you're around."
