Here's the funniest thing about the Muslim headwear debate: Christian women used to cover their hair.

Why is this woman covering her hair? She must be an oppressed Muslim.

Here is another awesome picture I found.

Guess where this woman is.

She is in Indonesia - a Muslim majority country.

Roman Catholic Ladies still cover their head in church or maybe that is optional nowadays. At one time it seemed mandatory. They even have the little white hats you could pick up on the way in. Havent hung out with them lately. I have figgered out why the bloodthirsty muslims make the wimmen wear the costume..they have super good looking gals and dont want nobody to be lusting after them. Best looking lady I ever saw in my life was from Iraq. She was liberated and did not have the Birka. Was not hard to solve that puzzle.

Did Christian women used to dress completely from head to toe with a little post box type slot for the eyes? That's surprisingly common up here, as is the hijab.

The hijab is the nearest thing to your comparison, and I have no real objection to that. If I was to be against that, logically I'd have to be against nuns wearing wimples and older women wearing headscarves and I'm not.

I agree. We need to have a dominant set of values that everyone (or most people) more or less subscribe to. Some variations are allowed, as long as they're fairly trivial and harmless.

What will be the cause of conflict is communities that live side by side have completely different (and opposing) values, and if the majority feels threatened by an ever larger minority.

Yes, if you're naive enough that would be it. There is no such thing as "getting along" when a clash of cultures co-exist under the same territory. Those who are proponents of the ideology (which it is) itself would want you to believe that but that's simply just not true. And come to think of it, the people in favor of multiculturalism are normally the ones who don't live even near those areas, that tells me more than anything.

I'm not saying that beings of different ethnicity can't work together at least for a short while, but in the long run, it leads to civil war.

Yes, and that ideology of yours could be titled "tolerance", which means that people who have stronger beliefs in what is right or wrong have the right to run you over. Since what is right or wrong must always be defined in a society, that will lead to a turn from let's say typical Western traditional beliefs to medieval morals? I'd guess it would be the ones with the stronger faith in its own moral and ethical code who prevails in any kind of conflict, where the tolerant will tolerate anything until they are not tolerant anymore. If you lived in Europe you would know the consequences already, and it's getting far worse by the day.

That's pretty racist. Lots of people of all kinds of different ethnicities live together in peace and harmony all the time. The real meat in the pudding, IMO, is culture and segregation, not necessarily race. A unicultural, multiracial Britain where each person has his or her place in society would work wonders - each person would bring his/her own experiences and cuisines to the pot, without the whole accepting or tolerating parts of that culture that we regard as barbaric.

Multiculturalism to most people means something along the lines of, a brown person is free to act brown, a white person is free to act white, and a black person is free to act black.

Ideally multiculturalism means, the white person is free to act black, a brown is free to act white, and the black is free to act brown.

Without anyone questioning it. It's when the idea of culture is able surpass ones ethnic background. In both directions, so a anglo can act chinese, and chinese can act jamaican.

Your talking about the hijab which is the head scarf, which is just like the one my cathoilic grandmother always wore to church.

The birka is just another extreme, and the obvious problem with it is the concealment of identity. The way people make it a religious issue is absurd. I'm 6 4 and would never be allowed out the front door with my face covered up. Safety overrides religious rites any day of the week, it's sexist to say I shouldn't be able to conceal my identity and they should.

Indeed - most people critical of Islam have no problem with people legally wearing headscarves and the like, even if they happen to dislike them. In fact, openly taking pot shots at them is more likely to come across as simple intolerance (see Geert Wilders and his "head rag tax", which is obviously just targeting Islam and not any of the other religions).

It's also the most extreme, fundamentalist female clothing garment in Islam, along with the niqab. There are loads of different Islamic garments that women wear, but almost all of them show the face apart from these two.

There is also no analogue in Western or non-hardline Islamic culture, come to think of it - indeed, similar face-covering garments are generally seen as threatening by most - balaclavas, medical masks, Scream masks, gas masks and so on - and are used for specific purposes and taken off when no longer needed.

I'm currently in Portland, not the most multi-cultural of cities, and if I sit on the nature trail by my parents' house, I can hear half a dozen languages over the course of a few hours. It's a nice city, infamous for its quality of life.

If resources become scarce,
then people might divide along ethnic lines and fight with each other; otherwise, they gradually inter-marry and become one culture (think Irish in the US, for example).

On the contrary; multiculturalism allows for heterozygosity and independent assortment of both beneficial and deleterious alleles, meaning that multi-cultural societies will, over time, become stronger than monotypic, inbred ones.
