salman rushdie has been lording it up at the UK taxpayers expense since the 80's. He came from Iran when he wrote the 'satanic verses'. I would have thought the French state would warm quite well to him.

Damn sight better than what the Religion of Peace has to offer.

When you get into the game of saying one religion is better than an other you're really going down the slippery slope of outright bigotry and ignorance. This isnt the first gay muslim to come out publically about his sexuality. Channel 4 made a documentary about sexual diversity in islam 6 years ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_Muslims

The problem isn't islam, the problem is that organised religion from across the board is inherently reactionary towards LGBT progress. One main reason islam has had a harder time maturing is cultural relativism. I somewhat suspect if America and the west acted on the onus to heal relations with the Islamic world muslims would stop railing against modernisation. If you can't acknowledge that and continue to act implicitly for sectarianism you may as well come out and say you hate muslims which makes you no better in principle than jihadists or hamas.

Thats neither here nor there in my view.

His asylum approval in the UK was transparent and shameless opportunist politiking on the part of Thatcher. Any other Iranian refugee would have been shown the door, except this guy wrote a book so they couldnt give him an entry visa fast enough.

The Jerusalem Post

Muhammad Ludovic Lütfi Zahed, a gay French-Algerian man, is slated to open the first gay mosque at the end of November.

The Turkish daily newspaper Hurriyet first reported last week on the plan to establish the mosque. Zahed told the Turkish paper, “In normal mosques, women have to sit in the back seats and wear a headscarf and gay men are afraid of both verbal and physical aggression. After performing the Hajj, I realized that a mosque for gays was a must for gay Muslims who want to perform their prayers.”

The Jerusalem Post reported earlier this year on Zahed’s marriage to Qiyam al-Din, a South African, during a ceremony outside Paris in February, approved by an imam in France. The men had previously married in South Africa, where same-sex marriage is legal, but the French government under then-president Nicolas Sarkozy refused to recognize it.

This courageous fella has a long fight ahead of him with a lot of violent people wanting his head. I don't envy the chap.

Good on him and all the best - I'll drink a beer in his honour tomorrow. :)

That's not news! What do you think they are all prying for when they assume the position 5 times day?

Islam (officially) has no tolerance of that lifestyle.

The cops will protect him.

Dear Thomas81, just Google 'Gay Church'....there's tons of them!
I think that the largest is the Metropolitan Church, I believe that they were the first church(es) formed ministering primarily to gays/lesbians.
They have always welcomed anyone wishing to attend or join, however, have never intended to be only for homosexuals.
Also, please Google 'Gay Synagogue'....they are in every major American city!

Is it affiliated with the Exodus project?

I recall years ago hearing of a gay church here in Spokane. As I haven't heard anything about it for some time, it may not have lasted (which would be a shame), or perhaps the novelty wore off, and the local news just stopped reporting on them.

God bless this man's courage. Even if the fanatics of his religion take his life, he's taken a first step which I think others will have the bravery to follow.

Dear John_Browning, I am unfamiliar with the Exodus project, but the church I referred to is the Metropolitan Community Churches, MCC, and they are very much alive and kicking.
I encourage all who are interested to Google 'Metropolitan Community Church' instead of me talking about them, honestly, I feel that they are the ones who should explain or present themselves and their beliefs.
Point being that there are churches and synagogues that minister to primarily homosexual membership throughout America.
I do know that the Metropolitan Community church was founded in 1968. There may have been other churches before that which served primarily gays/lesbians, but I am not familiar with them.

Hopefully one day there will be no need for gay Mosques, because every Mosque will be able to cater for people of all sexualities.

Likewise all other religious buildings.

There is even a synagogue in NYC for homosexual Jews. Congregation B'nai Gay. Only one trouble. When the Purim festival comes around everyone wants to play Queen Esther. They have to import Lesbians to play King Achashveros and Haman.

The synagog in New York that is friendly/welcoming to gays, has performed same-sex weddings since 2006, is B'nai Jeshurun in Manhattan.
Google it, it has an interesting history, and a beautiful building that is on the Historical Register.

The other comments were a joke.
