the whole point of a debate is to learn something new by receving and giving contructive criticism and bouncing ideas against others, so unless said criteria is dynamically moving as the discussion moves along then one is in effect not having a debate.

if what you mean is that there is a singular point concept or topic that one adheres to then i wholeheartedly agree, but even then it is important to reevaluate that criterion dynamically in certain situations.
that also entails that any argument presented should be properly supported.

I am starting an online political debate about the evils of online political debates. Why? Because I can.

Alcohol kills more brain cells than weed, in fact I am not sure weed even kills brain cells.....since current research shows it can protect brain cells from being damaged hence the reason in MMJ states it can be prescribed for epilepsy. But no I do not think outlawing discussions would be a good idea it would violate freedom of speech and expression and such.

I actually was intending to be humorous with my first post in this thread.

Still, I do believe that the anonymous nature of the Internet does tend to make the nature of Internet political debates a lot less about communication and a lot more about contests of who can be the biggest a**hole in the room. A lot of people say things on the Internet that they would never say to anybody sitting right in front of them, after all.

at least they then say them, giving yet another avenue of understanding,

in real life people would simply think them and internalizze them with nothing anyone can do or say about it since no one knows.

Sometimes, that would be a good thing.

I was referring to the namecalling and the finger-pointing behavior that any adult should know they should have left behind when they outgrew middle school. In that case, people who engage in that do not need a free pass to say whatever they want to anybody. If they really feel the urge to engage in such infantile behaviors, they need to be talking to a therapist and moving past that, and they should not be encouraged to dwell in that zone of spiritual deadness.

No.

Evidence, please?

People are idiots. Political people even moreso. Those who initiate political discussions are the worst.

If you just focus on the Republican/Democrat divide then political discussion will rot your brain but if you learn about ancient history or foreign cultures then you will find politics enlightening.

Do you honestly think that adults don't engage in namecalling and finger pointing? 8O :lmao:

Political discussion on the internet is exactly the same as political discussion in real life except people on the internet can't threaten each other with violence or censor each other by interrupting each other. That is why the internet is so awesome.

It's simpler than that.

I've enjoyed many a spirited political debate online. Depending upon where I post I get honest arguments, a great list of sources cited, and open minds which will change if given new and relevant information.
I've also got people online that I either end up trolling or just sniping at their political posts because they refuse to acknowledge reality when it's presented to them with sources backing up the information.

If you're having difficulty debating people online or are getting angry by the responses you're getting, try elsewhere. Eventually, you'll find a place where you and the people there can debate and get along.

Yeah, which gives people who can't really hold an debate in person an edge. They result to name calling and sheer brute force to get the point across.

Best Regards,

Jake

The internet is a double-edged sword. It is awesome as a free land of discussion where all points of view can be expressed. I support that.

The other side? The people who are the loudest on the Internet are often the ones who don't know how to say anything worth listening to.

Thinking about it now, that's a lot like the real-world political arena. Only that the people I know are a lot less likely to spout out racial and sexually harassing epitaphs over mere disagreements in any kind of policy (related to such topics or not). The Internet makes behavior like that easier for people who are too cowardly to face any real consequences for saying such things.

All of this talk started with an opening post that was intended to be humorous. I guess it really is hard for people to read my intentions, even on the Internet.

It is possible to harass people on the internet but nobody will listen to you if you do.
People on the internet, like people in real life, will listen to an idea if they like it. The internet is a place where anyone can say anything without being silenced by emotional manipulation or the threat of violence.

And those same people will go ballistic if you say something they don't agree with.
