Don't believe the propaganda. Remember the lies we were told about Iraq. Assad is not stupid nor is he crazy, using chemical weapons would be signing his own execution order. Remember Assad was a guy we called a reformer not long before these protests/insurgencies started popping up, The same with Gaddafi before we stuck a knife in his back. Assad isn't going to use chemical weapons, he's putting them on the table to stop inevitable foreign invasion.

Assad is a bad man but so are the terrorists he's fighting against, stay the hell out. There are no good guys.

It depends how full a deck Assad is playing with. I agree with most people that if he's even remotely sane he'll saber-rattle at most but never use it.

The thing that's really sad however is that everyone's letting this thing prolong because they're afraid of how many of those fighting the regime are Al Qaeda trying to take control; as if they're hoping that all the cukes will kill each other - meanwhile 100x that in civilians die in the process. The cities are secure, the suburbs are the last stand of terrorists, and more are being killed than are coming in. They are also getting their suporters killed. Their supply lines have been cut, the government controls the food supply, which is ample in government protected places.

The Army has shed deserters, those left are fighting for their country, and have seen the videos of their captured friends being shot. They have learned urban warfare, and how to isolate terror cells.

Assad might really be desperate enough to do it. The Mossad is concerned enough that Israel is considering getting mixed up in it. Personally I think we need to learn our lessons from Egypt and Libya and make Assad an offer to keep him in power that would make him our puppet. It would be better than leaving another power vacuum that militant fundamentalists would end up filling.

Like a lot of you said, it just doesn't seem to make sense to use chemical weapons at this point, everyone is watching....China and Russia would be under scrutiny as well..... I guess if Assad is on the way out, he already has his home in Venezuela picked out, maybe it's a last ditch effort? I can see Iran with a nuclear missile throwing its weight around, or more likely smuggle some nuclear material into the west and have some idiot strap it to his chest....

In terms of why Obama would be bullshitting us, I could see him being a coward and coming out strong on something knowing that he'll never have to back his words up. They know Assad won't use chemical weapons so it's safe to come out strong with big words. I'm not saying this is true, I always wonder why the white house hands out certain press releases, I'm pretty sure American media found out about chemical weapons from recent press releases by the white house, which are then followed by Obama and Hillary Clinton making strong statements warning Syria.....or maybe that's just politics in general.
