Been there. Agreed.

Went there for the "Glory of Easter" passion play on a school field trip. Met the guy who played Jesus. We were all very impressed when he informed us that he also played the biker who Schwarzenegger threw onto a flat top grill near the beginning of Terminator 2.

The Crystal Cathedral is an impressive architectural work. I can't figure out whether the building is a greater testament to their pastor's innovative vision or to his vanity.

I don't consider the building to be the "church." Churches are about the people who meet together, and mega churches have mega people. Crystal Cathedral started out strong and lost their vision. They started losing people and panicked. They tried to "update" their format, which was never their problem. Any time a church is losing people and they change their format to reach out to "hip" people, it's going to be seen as disingenuous. Stick with preaching the gospel and community outreach rather than trend-following and you'll do fine.

They also depended on a large number of tithers to pay off a tremendous brick-and-mortar, or glass-and-steel debt. The lesson to learn here is churches should always work towards financial independence rather than betting on drawing people in through superficial appearances.

The Catholics now own it, due to mis-management of church finances by the Schuller family.

It's now called "Christ Cathedral".

Seems to me that the 'Mega-churches' are just a return to cathedrals.
