I will have to go digging for this again, but it seems that Washington does not like the police being too well armed either. Any time an agency orders something class 3 (SBR/SBS/FA), the ATF is all over them.

You know, I was almost tempted when I first heard about that, not because of his gun control views but because he's a flaming asshole, but then I realized that he's very valuable to the gun control debate as a spectacular example of how intellectually bankrupt the anti-gun side is.

He is a prat because he claimed not to be aware the phone hacking that the tabloids were doing, and his tabloid, which he was editor of at the time, wasn't up to that sort of thing.

However insiders, disputed his account. Not only was he was aware that his paper was up to it, Jeremy Paxman who is the anchor Newsnight, a well respected journalist, and interviewer, said he had lunch with him at the time, and that Morgan had explained to him the technique, just boasting.

So he lied about knowing about it, and if he was aware of the possibility it could have been used by his team, he did nothing to ensure they weren't using it.

Do you object terribly if I post some studies that show that guns 'r' bad? At the very least, it informs you (unless of course you have seen these studies already, which in dox's case I wouldn't be surprised about); at best, you can point out flaws in the studies. I read your article, incidentally, and did some further reading on the sociologists contained within

States with high gun ownership and lax gun laws lead nation in Gun Death: http://www.vpc.org/press/1006gundeath.htm
Guns kept in a home are 22 times more likely to harm the occupier than be used in self defence: http://journals.lww.com/jtrauma/Abstrac ... me.10.aspx
Guns are used aggressively more than 4 times more than they are used in self defence: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/s ... 3/art00003
Guns are used in crime far more frequently than in self defence, and most cases reported as "self defence" are not http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/research/hi ... g_2009.pdf
In Australia, the gun buyback appears to have prevented 200 suicides a year: http://www.theage.com.au/national/guns- ... 13xmn.html (also worth noting that this study failed to find that for Queensland, but did for the whole of Australia: http://www.biomedexperts.com/Abstract.b ... his_method )

Murders carried out by concealed carriers (evidence in favour of perhaps tightening who may own a gun, though not a good argument against the concept of concealed carry): http://www.vpc.org/ccwkillers.htm

Relevant to both sides:
Changes in crime levels in England and Wales following gun control: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov. ... osb601.pdf (burglaries fell more than "expected" despite people being less likely to have a gun to defend themselves, whereas violent crime went up more than in the rest of Western Europe- obviously cdnic)

1. The source for most of the VPC's information is out of their ass.
2. I've seen the list of claimed murderers carrying concealed weapons. They padded it with people that had the charges dropped, were acquitted, and some that did not have a license, and some cases that were still pending. there were something like 65 cases on that list last I checked. Florida alone is soon going to be issuing it's 1 millionth license. Any list short enough to read in an evening amounts to cherry picked data.

I decided I'm not going to play google-fu over Christmas.

Guys, if you look at the links I posted, you'll notice none of them are to the NRA, SAF, GOA, or other explicitly partisan organizations, so please don't insult my intelligence by posting stuff from VPC, the Brady bunch, etc. Both of those organizations in particular are intellectually dishonest at the least, lumping together gun murders and suicides to create scarier looking numbers, inventing novel new terms for firearms (a hunting rifle is now an "intermediate caliber sniper rifle"... ) to ratchet up the fear, intentionally confusing people about the difference between auto and semi-auto, etc. Don't even get me started on "concealed carry killers", a feature so bankrupt of honesty that even other media outlets have pointed out their flawed methodology.

Note that I am not defending any of the pro gun groups here, I like to think for myself, merely pointing out that those two anti-gun groups in particular are not reliable sources for reasons having nothing to do with their political alignment.

I know nothing about the VPC, obviously take those studies with a pinch of salt if they were done by partisan organisations. I did think those two studies looked particularly weak.

You might also like to put together a list of handy quotes relevant to firearms.

For example

Standard NRA Tripe wrote:
Guns don't kill. People kill

Miss Ayn Rand wrote:
Force and mind are opposites; morality ends where a gun begins.

Sigmund Freud wrote:
A fear of weapons is a sign of ret*d sexual and emotional maturity.

Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote:
I have a love interest in every one of my films - a gun.

Charlston Heston aka Moses wrote:
Among other evils which being unarmed brings you, it causes you to be despised.

A good quote can always come in handy in any internet debate. It is too bad that the Bible doesn't say anything about guns.

Also, a collection of uplifting songs

Gun availability does not seem to affect murder rates.

I posted that study previously in this thread:
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postxf207971-0-75.html

However, I also found a study which showed that gun ownership and murder rates were positively correlated within The United States (higher gun ownership = higher murder rates).
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17070975

I still don't have full access, but the abstract does present the central conclusions.

Edit: I found another study which demonstrates how much the US is an outlier compared to other OECD countries when it comes to firearms related deaths.

My hat's off to the OP. :salut:
I haven't read all of the linked articles yet (been busy with Christmas) but those that I have read are excellent.
This would make a good sticky otherwise it'll eventually sink into oblivion as all threads eventually do.

You could just add it to your favourites in your browser. Guns aren't that central to this section.

Or, given the huge number of threads devoted to things that go "Bang!", you could have Alex create a section for you.
