That's what I've never understood about Islam. If you think about it, it doesn't make any sense at all. Compare Christianity and Islam.

The founder of Christianity is claimed by Christians to be God himself in human form. However, Christians put images of Jesus all over the place, are happy to have historical debates about the life of Jesus, and portray Jesus with a vulnerable side.

The founder of Islam is claimed by Muslims to be some random guy that God dictated a book to. However, Muslims forbid images of Mohammed, refuse to think about the historical facts surrounding Mohammed, and generally think that Mohammed was the Best Person Ever.

Which, unfortunately for Muslims, makes them literally wide open to mockery and ridicule from everyone and even more so than Christianity - hell, even more than the Catholic Church, and we've had decades of great fun taking the absolute piss out of them. The Catholic Church is a joke in the Western world, a ludicrous, massive sideshow of pious ignorance, calculated brutality and single-minded, premeditated neglect of million of starving, poor people, laced with pathetic insouciance for the victims of their evil, wicked, megarich cult. The power of the church is a poison on every civilised country where it has any sort of hold or meaning whatsoever and it deserves to be sealed in concrete and dumped in the Barents.

I actually feel sorry for a lot of the genuinely peaceful Muslim men and women - good, honest people really, just like anyone else - particularly those that feel they have to defend their religion even though, deep down, they realise the truth of it all. I genuinely do feel pity for them, and I'd hate to be in the position that they're in. I can't imagine the mental torment they are going through as they've had and are continuing to have a colossally cruel trick played on them. The brighter ones realise this and, perhaps having had things click into place, slowly move away from the religion if they're able to, particularly if they live in a non-Muslim country.

I'm being honest when I say I have genuine sympathy for those people trying to defend a 7th century man of violence, a deeply flawed and failed character, a man of his time. I wouldn't want to feel like I had to defend someone like that, any more than I feel like I would have to defend any mass murderer and slaver at any time in history. It's a horrible task, and it's heartbreaking at times watching people trying to put something back together that never really fit into place in the first instance.

People might well call me bigoted, but I'm so relieved I don't have that responsibility and never will have. I consider myself deeply fortunate to be living in a more or less secular country.

If I believed in Satan I would conclude that Islam was deliberately invented by Satan to make life miserable for the humans. Satan pretended to be God when he hoodwinked that goat herder Mohammed into believing that God as talking to him. The result is a religion that is so miserable, evil and wicked that it turns perfectly good people into fiendish killers or those who cover for fiendish killers. This is as you pointed out. The only hope for the world is that someday Islam will detoxify itself, even as some sects of Christianity and Judaism have detoxified their religions beliefs.

For example, the Jews. Back in biblical times Israelites plundered, burned and raped their way through Canaan killing women and children. The biblical Israelites were as bad-a** as the jihadim are today. In the course of time, Israel was invaded and conquered by other peoples (Assyrians, Babylonians) and the Jews were scattered to other lands, where they took their fate to be divine punishment. That humbled the Jews and forced them to learn to live with other people without being ultra annoying to them.

Christianity split into numerous sects none of them powerful enough to dominate all the others. That plus the rise of material science forced Christian to modify their doctrine and to some extent become more secular. Thus, the Crusades stopped around 1300 c.e. and Christians learned to live with themselves and other people more peacefully. Eventually heresy was no long punished as a capital crime and republics arose in which religious organizations did not have dominant power. Example: the U.S. There is no State established church. It is against the law for the government to establish a religion.

That is what I mean by detoxification. Hopefully, events will cause Muslims to detoxify their religion (or give it up) in which case the world will become somewhat more peaceful.
