We never referred to the doings of the late (an unlamented) Soviet Union as terrorism, nor did we refer to the Soviet State as a terrorist organization.

Most of the parties we call terrorist are (1) Muslim and (2) not governments, but parties of people organized along religious lines and operating for religious purposes.

There are plenty of Christian, Jewish and nationalist terrorist organisations, but most terrorism is carried out in the name of Islam.

You could say that but that would be untrue. Most terrorism is done in the name of power.

Terrorism is simply the tactic of targeting non-combatants. It's a very effective tactic, which is why every country uses it when they can get away with it.

The "War on Terror" is actually the "War On Muslims That We Want To Attack For Various Strategic Reasons".

The War of Terror also serves to build fascism... to build tyranny at home. They don't want it to end, ever!

With the Holy Land case, the 6th Amendment was officially buried. When the Supreme Court refused to hear it, that was that. People got 65 years in prison for doing precisely what USAID was doing guided by the State Department guidelines. People do what the government says and still gets 65 years in prison because some Israeli spies show up in court completely anonymously with zero rights of the defence to cross-examine said spies destroying the 6th Amendment.

This is just one such case. It's open season on rights and liberties in name of the War of Terror.

depends how you define terrorism. If you define terrorism as the use of violence to satisfy political interests, then most terrorism is carried out in the name of capitalism.

Then Israel should be defined as a terrorist nation, their raison d'etre was simply because they used violence to acquire land that was not and is not theirs, but does the US view Israel as terrorist?

Violence alone does make you a terrorist. If that were the case every standing army defending its borders against an invading army would be defined as a group of "terrorists". Police aprehending criminals using force would be "terrorists".

Violence against noncombatants to inspire 'terror' ( or perhaps 'shock and awe') is whats commonly called 'terrorism'.

But-yes- governements do seem to confuse the word "terror" with the word "inconvenience". The Chinese government brands the Dalai Lama as a "terrorist". So our government is probably also rather creative in stretching the meaning of the 'terrorist' as well.

i've come to the conclusion that 'terrorism' is a meaningless weasel word.

The only terrorism is the fear of terrorism itself.

More people die from illnesses, stress related co morbids and road traffic accidents every year than from terrorism. Terrorism related fatalities represent a negligible fraction.

Perhaps government should focus on the former instead.

Asymmetric warfare is the more tactical term for "terrorism". As a technique it's probably as old as warfare itself.

Also, most terrorists aren't poor themselves. Some might represent a repressed or marginalized group, others are simply obnoxious extremists, while many are a mix of both.

Quote:
Does that mean all the American presidents, senators and diplomats who urged the IRA to lay down its arms will be prosecuted as terrorists? Or is Northern Irish Republicanism a cause endorsed by US governments? How about the loyalists, like the UVF? They must have talked to that lot, too.

It's not an ex-post-facto law, so they're alright.

Interesting that the Real IRA makes the terrorist list, but not the Provos. I guess they're okay.

What is terror. Is it more than just frightening folks?

Here is an Act of Terror for you: Hillary Clinton threatening to sit on your face.

You could say that about literally anyone, though.
