Do they?
Try holding the opinion that homosexuality is wrong, or that transsexuals should be gassed, or that Palestine has no right to exist.
I reached those views by choosing to listen to the intellectually honest and empirical cases behind them. If I had chosen to ignore, it would easilly have arrived at the contrary view. I mantain its still a matter of choice.
There is no empirical case for homosexuality being morally right, or transsexuals deserving to live, or Palestine having a right to exist. You cannot conduct an experiment to prove any of those things. Morals and rights are not physical things.
You really think the "social conservatives" think "oh, that contradicts my world view, I'll ignore it so I can go on preaching hate"? What if, for example, the case is simply never put to them, or the case against gay rights is put to them more persuasively than the case for gay rights?
You are no more able to choose your views than you are to choose your sexuality or race.
