Well, hey, if this goes through it will at least give a large short-term boost and a smaller boost over time to marriage related industries - hotels, catering, flowers, etc.

And private eyes ( if you can have same sex marriage then by definition you could also have same sex adultery).

And private eyes ( gays cant commit adultery if they cant get married).

It's like I've been saying all along: "You aren't cheating unless you're married".

I predict boom times for divorce lawyers and private investigators.

Why is marriage important? Because thousands of decisions about our daily lives become more complex where the legal status of spouses disappears.

The big ticket items are obviously tax, income splitting, retirement savings, survivorship benfits in pensions, capital transfers, property, participation in employment benefits, consent to medical care and custody of children.

But there are countless aspects of daily life where spousal relationships are explicitly recognized. Many of these are matters of private arrangements--like joint membership in clubs or organizations, but the legal recognition of same sex marriage is a catalyst for the kind of social change that does away with the perception that a person's same-sex partner is somehow less important than another person's opposite sex spouse.

Marriage is important--and calling it marriage is important, too. We have already redefined what the family means in North America, it is time that the law caught up with society.

Some people think The Gay is contagious. If we don't stop people from being able to marry a same sex partner it will destroy the institution of heterosexual marriage. I mean, why would anyone ever want to marry someone from the opposite sex when they can marry someone of the same sex? I know I certainly wouldn't. If The Gay is made legal and culturally permissible everyone will decide to become gay and there will be no more babies and no more families. All babies will have to be grown in test tubes from donated stem cells. People will no longer have a mommy or daddy but they will be sent government welfare checks from the day they are incubated.

At least the abortion debate would be settled.

If gay people can marry, then the next thing will be murder being legalized. It's a slippery slope!

I think somewhere down that slope, well before murder, people will be able to marry their pets. People will petition the courts to be able to marry their dog, and then when dog-human marriage is legalized cat lovers will demand equal rights. Then we'll eventually have to legalize all inter-species marriage, including insects and microbes. People will also demand that they have the right to reproduce asexually by growing a clone fetus off their leg.

Exactly, and after that people would be allowed only to marry dogs. There's no other possible, logical outcome.

I am personally against gay marriage, at least how it's being proposed in NZ, as there are a lot of loop holes which take away rights from other people. If you've watched the parliament debates in NZ, you'll see.

On the whole though I think NZ should be working on making Civil Unions better. It is what they wanted in the first place (at least in NZ).

As long as you have death sentences in your country, murder is legalized since a long time. So maybe its the opposite: The existence of death sentence, is responsible for gay marriage being allowed? ^^

But now earnest: So gay marriage is allowed in my country, and I wouldnt know why this should be destroying my coming marriage in any way. So the cinema owners in the next town were gay too, and my popcorn never was destroyed because of them also eating popcorn. ^^

Gay marriage has recently been legalized - by popular vote(!) - here in Washington state, and my wife and I are still doing just fine with our marriage.

Even though I think the government should stay out of marriage, as long as heterosexuals are recognized as married, gays deserve the recognition as well.

As for the OP's question: because it's important that the LGBT community is recognized and treated with respect. This issue with the supreme court is just one of the steps towards that future.
