I would have thought France would be more open minded than Britain.

Most countries have those. In many countries, the percentage of irrational, bigoted cretins is far higher.

If I was a gay person, I'd feel more comfortable in (most of) Denmark rather than, say, Uganda.

I'm sure Uganda makes America and Europe look like a gay paradise.

I think Uganda has a life sentence for homosexual acts.

At least I think that's what they said on Top Gear.

I just realised I learn everything from Top Gear.

France is a very polarized country, politically, and constitutional changes that were intended to avoid cohabitation governments (where the Prime Minister and the President came from different ends of the political spectrum) have served to reinforce this divide where the party that wins the presidency will often carry a majority in the National Assembly, as well.

Accordingly, popular opposition to government proposals can be rooted in part in substantive opposition, and in part in partisan opposition.

I am a bit surprised by this (there have been gayborhoods in Paris before indoor plumbing), but I see this as a larger trend. From my standpoint, it appears French society has been dislocated. Unemployment is surging there, and I have noticed the French state is losing its geopolitical importance in Europe and the world. Perhaps the French homophobia spate is general social anxiety manifesting itself?

The lashing out at unpopular minorities is a common symptom of a society in distress.
