California isn't bad about that. It is the deep south you have to worry about. And Utah.

I agree. Avoid red states and you should be right at home.

In general we don't talk about religion, because the listener often jumps to the conclusion the speaker is trying to convert them. On the east coast, I've met pagans in every job I've ever had and met many atheists in my personal life. Its my understanding the west coast is even more accepting of these things.

I live in California and Atheism is common. You shouldn't have a problem.

^ John is right. Atheism seems to be a non-issue around here, unless the local Islamic population finds out.

Online a company posted an image that included the words 'God damn' which was met with an angry customer complaining about using the lords name in vain, I replied pointing out that HER god may have a problem with it but not all gods do...the response was of course that there was only one god, absolutely no acknowledgement that her belief was her own and not the absolute truth.

Uh, frankly I'd phrase it the same way. I don't understand this obsession people have with finding it virtuous to be unconvinced of your own beliefs, to be honest...

Most of the Christians say stuff like "god damn" all the time, anyone who complains about it is an anomaly. And, you're not going to be expected to "hide" your beliefs. People probably will expect that you not make your beliefs obvious (just don't go around yelling at everyone who mentions God, or whatever), but if it comes up in a conversation or something, I would say it's likely to not be a problem. If someone assumes you're Christian and you correct them politely, I don't think most people will react badly, as long as you're clear about it just being a mistake, and don't act absolutely furious that you could be mistaken for one of them.

also if someone uses their faith as a means of controlling or judging others am I supposed to keep my mouth shut? If anyone where I live in England was to assume others follow Christianity or use their faith to act with prejudice towards others everyone would rip into them, where I come from that's just not accepted - but I have a feeling that in certain groups here it is accepted.

Um, I'm probably not the best person to answer this because I tend to have a troublesome level of approval of picking fights when people are being jerks, but it depends on the situation IMO. If it's clearly within someone else's family/social group, you will be expected to keep your mouth shut. If it's some random guy berating people on the street or something, go ahead and rip into them if you want to.
