Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and swathes of the North are not overcrowded. The main urban core of the country is very much so. Tell the poor suckers in East London living in converted garden sheds that there isn't a housing shortage. A number of councils in the SE literally have nowhere to house people, hence shuttling folk off to devastated places like Hull and Stoke with spare capacity but little employment. You're going off on a wee bit of a tangent, I think.

Thats actually a lie perpetuated by the right wing to advocate tighter immigration controls.

Both Germany and Japan have more people per square unit area, yet both nations enjoy superior average living standards than the UK.

Japan is horrible for the amount of room though, people live in very small flats that make Tower Hamlets look like Winchester (the problem is made worse because much of Japan is essentially uninhabitable due to relief). And we're more densely populated than Germany, it has large industrial swathes which are densely populated but it also retains much more wilderness than the UK.

There are better examples- Belgium, Netherlands, Malta, arguably Singapore (despite their problems with the justice system), Hong Kong, and Bahrain (despite the regime there).

Blame underinvestment in areas outside of London and the Home Counties in that case.

If Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are economic deserts then the South East of England is the economic black hole of the UK. Its not the fault of immigrants if that is where all of the work and opportunities err towards.

Frankly I wish there was more immigration here in Northern Ireland, we might see more economic activity and better jobs. Especially from countries like China and India who tend to export technical skill.

Hell, resurrect Cromwell, and send boatloads of English colonists to Ireland!

No, Ireland has its own analogous problems with wealth gravitating towards Dublin. The last thing it needs is more metrosexual w*kers with their long hair and their apple laptops from across the water from London and Birmingham pushing up the prices of inner city rent.

Population flows always follow jobs. The only way I can think of to revive an economically depressed area is to make it a tax haven in order to attract wealthy and entrepreneurial people who have the ability to create employment. Have the Ulster politicians grasped this nettle?

Austerity? try prosperity. evil does that. Put to the test, which we had finding a non uk English national in the thatcher years took a lot of work to bend the rules and create a more modern society. She never even wanted us to expand our interests globally for peace sake. Taking this into consideration I think she would have limited the use of artillery in Iraq and Afghanistan and brought forth a home coming for the soldiers. No one could win back her territory in this day of age nor would they of fought her corner for the sake of patriotism.
Dominance and marginal dictatorship are the only trademarks left of a common nationalist resilience to on-going debates in our current cultural and legal system.

If there is austerity it's only because we live in austere times.
Only a stronger economy and people back to work will ease that, not more spending as if money grows on trees.

I bet if the debt were abolished the economy would flourish.

Nonsense. Capacity has never been greater, technology never more advanced.

It's just a matter of sharing the jobs that create the wealth, instead of shipping them overseas. Making people more impoverished by taking benefits from them isn't going to accomplish anything.

Pray tell, where will these jobs come from without more spending? Wages don't grow on trees.

First the socialists complain the capitalists are exploiting the workers. Then they complain the capitalists are not exploiting them enough. When the capitalists figure out how to produce with no workers or hardly any the socialists will scream bloody murder.

Ha, Ha. I think the word austerity, actually, is quoted from thatcher herself, including how she introduced a poll tax in England. In a way, I think the new government although tory, are making this the new bedroom tax. I believe that labour abolished it and yet somehow, they brought it back.
