On the surface, affirmative action sounds unfair. When we have a white student with the same grades as a black student, why does the black student get in but the white student doesn't? Qualifications and not race should be the deciding factor.

But to end up in a situation where 90% of the qualified kids are white doesn't work either.

So what's really needed is what I'd call "preventive affirmative action" - target minority kids at an early age and help them overcome the disadvantages that they might be born into - make their schools better, do things to help their lives at home foster learning instead of impeding it. Devote more resources to geographic areas or if need be to minority groups where there are academic deficiencies, but do it early on. That would help to alleviate the need for affirmative action later on, and would also help eliminate another unfair aspect of affirmative action - that qualified kids end up in school and in classes with unqualified kids.
