How fat and tall are man sized targets in Denmark? :P

Well, I never said I hit the target in the first shot  . Compensating for bullet drop at that range without a scope isn't easy.

I hated the lee enfield. I find its a very front heavy weapon which for me doesn't help the recoil.

I actually earned my marksman badge with the L-98 target rifle which is basically an SA-80 but without any automatic or semi-automatic setting. A lot of cadets hated it, but loved that weapon. Its much shorter than the .22 with a very balanced centre of gravity, ergonomic handle and a 20 round clip making it simple to reload. The first time I fired it the rangemaster asked if i had used it before and I said "no". He didn't believe me which was a big ego rush at the time.

/\ I never tried a Bullpup rifle. It obviously makes it possible to shorten the length of the rifle, but I've heard that the SA-80 doesn't handle recoil very well...

I actually like the balance point to be forward of the magazine. Most modern guns I have shot are too light to compress my spine, which makes consistent off hand shots difficult.

Having been in the military and living very close to the backwoods and knowing people who have military grade guns and ranges I have had lots of fun over the years with shooting sports.

I sort of am interested in the idea of of shooting deer for meat, becuase they have no natural predators in the UK. Culls are currently at 30% per year, and the organization responsible has worked out that it need to increase to 50% per year to maintain population, without overrunning the country side, and natural wilderness too,

This would require me to be accurate, so probably some range experiencing would help.

For me it is a better more ethical alternative to farmed meat, though I'm not totally against that either, however the price of meat is very high. I think getting direct from source if possible is best. Venison is healthier/leaner then other red meat. If you can get a sizable carcass, get it butcher then you can freeze most of it.

However I don't know if I will ever have time. It is just an idea floating around in my head. To do it once a year.

Sounds like we have enough people here to create the worlds first international autistic shooting competition. Imagine the media coverage.

Lee Enfield is a weapon I love for purely sentimental reasons. The SA-80 was a bag of rubbish when we did joint exercises with the Brits, no left-handed conversion. In the Aussie Army we use the F-88 Styer.

@Dox, that range sounds ridiculous.

Meh.
I enjoyed the challenge of hitting the target, and getting better over time, but I didn't like the noise (even with ear protection) and found the feel of the holding and firing the gun itself to be uninspiring. I might have enjoyed shooting trap more. I did enjoy archery more: the stretch of the bow, the hum of the taut bowstring, the whoosh and thwack of the arrow.

Neither activity was stimulating enough to make into a long-term hobby, though I've toyed with the idea of getting into more challenging target-shooting along the lines of what pentathloners do.

I'll go shoot at the public range occasionally but the noise does bother me.

The rifles they use in the Olympics are top notch engineering capable of putting multiple bullets through the same hole, which makes them go for thousands even when they aren't custom fited

Maybe you should try using muffs and ear plugs together. You need to be totally relaxed to shoot your best.

I would love to shoot at a range. Its problematic where I live. There is one pistol-only range run by complete bastards, and then there are some membership-only "gun club" outdoor ranges. A friend in high school tried to sell me his pump-action 12-guage for cheap, but I declined. Probably for the best, but I always wonder "what if"
