What if they make a mistake of giving the android actual emotions like it actually falls in love with a human but then realizes it cannot get pregnant and then gets depressed?

In fairness they'll probably work out how to build a gynoid with a functioning reproductive system before they crack the 'love algorithm'.

I love this thread. It reminds me of that movie 'A.I' by Spielburg, set in the year 3000. Its about the first robot with the ability to 'love'.

The way society is changing, sexbots will be huge in the near future. Fewer people are coupling up (in relationships), and more (young) people are virgins than before: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/hea ... 45556388/1
The fact that young men are poorer than they've ever been doesn't help things, since women tend to be turned off by guys with no job or a crappy job that live with their parents. That, and women are doing better than men now, which increases the effect...

To get a look at where the US is heading, here's Japan right now: http://www.vice.com/the-vice-guide-to-t ... e-industry (video, probably NSFW)

Looks fun! I wonder how feminists would responde to it. Now that they can no longer use sex as a weapon? Or convince men that they dont need or want men when men can get their pleasures somewhere else.

Within ten years most jobs will be replaced by computers, and a robot is just some more hardware.

Most of the work has been done with digital animation, it is getting lifelike, and the jump to 3D is not far.

The choices are hard or soft, and while Industrial follows a design based on the work, a Spotweldasaurus, the desire for a humaniod form mostly comes from 4chan. Their idea of design is surface.

Before the sex toy industry matures, as there are plenty of real humans that would do a lot for much less than the cost of the more advanced robots, there will be half softs. A grocery cheackout does not ad value, or require eye appeal, and could end somewhere below the head and arms, Same for most office work. Reception is an answering machine, but does depend on looks, so a model that seated behind a desk, does not need a seat. It can interact with real people,

It would be much cheaper to build a sex worker from the waist down, A less humanoid design, the plain industrial model, where form follows function, could be great with the lights out and skip the small talk. A single opening could have the function of mouth and virgina, and twenty more settings. Vacuum, ripple, heat control, there are program options. Combine that with VR glasses, sound, and minds are not hard to trick.

My own work has been towards an assistant, something that can link me to the digital world. I build models, of new things, and it is slow. One change, I start over. something that can fabricate, where the next version, or ten, are waiting the next morning for testing, 3D printers are heading there, but that is only part, and assembled, wired, mechanical, combining a Laser cutter, CNC machining, assembly, can all work one at a time.

That is the mechanical, but it is also possible to learn me. There is a range, I go to a Hardware with a drawing, it means nothing to the clerk. I go to my machine shop with words, they say draw me a picture. A digital program that lives in my reality would be helpful. The things I work on are secret, Patentable, no one sees it all.

Two people can keep a secret, if one of them is dead, or a machine.

I think they'll decrease the demand for prostitution and casual sex, but not really for relationships. The demand for relationships is decreasing with our society becoming more compartmentalised, but not because of technology.

It would make it harder for women to find men for relationships because some men are perfectly happy with very minimal social interaction and won't suffer a relationship if they could just get regular sex for the one-off fee of the sex robot. I think it would result in only the more sociable men being available - and by this I don't mean NT alpha males, just the ones who actually do get lonely (which can include aspies.) This would lead to better relationships (that are harder to find, maybe) because both partners will be more on the same wavelength.

I really wouldn't use one a sex robot because I have a partner that loves me, so I would have no need. Even if I was single, finding a partner would be much more of a priority. I don't think that's just because I'm female, but because I'm a certain way.

I agree. Men will still want relationships too - well, some of them. But I also agree that it will greatly reduce the power women have by withholding sex from desperate men, which would be an excellent development in my view!

the 'touch' sense is already covered (from the waist down at least). I won't provide links due to the inherent nature, but if you're curious google a device called 'realtouch'. If someone could work out a way to combine this with Oculus Rift, you won't see me on Wrong Planet very much.

That's a very long way from "full immersion virtual reality" as the OP was talking about.

Still, a programmable sex toy, hmm... Let me take a look at that SDK... :D

That's not a power, it's a right. Women want sex, too (trust me on this.) They have the right to choose who to have sex with and exercising that right isn't about withholding it from anyone, however desperate that person may be.

What'll happen is that men won't get so frustrated when a woman doesn't want to shag them, which will be an excellent development in my view.

I don't think VR porn will impact society any more than regular porn. Humans crave human contact and no matter how real porn gets it will not replace the real thing. Unless they can incorporate smells, tastes etc into it I don't see how anyone will abandon the real thing for VR
