Sounds like you got it right to me.
Things get complicated per situation in the real world. But thats the general rule.
This stuff about just noticing someone's skin color being 'racist' is perhaps well intended, but going overboard. Too much of anything is too much.
Exactly. I didn't react any differently because he was a big black guy than I would if he had been a little white lady. I simply mentioned his physical description in the story. Now, if I had said "He was a big black guy, so I put my hand on my gun" that would have been racist. Or "He was a big black guy so I didn't say anything to upset him, you know how mean they are" or some other such stupid crap.

When a term has been used to systematically discriminate against an ethnic group, it becomes racist. Do you plan to reclaiming the swastika because it had a religious significance before the Nazis used it? If you go around putting swastikas on things, people will assume you are a racist. If you go around calling people thugs and they do not engage in criminal behavior, no one will know what you're talking about if they are white, and everyone will know what you mean if they are black. They'll know you're saying some racist BS.
It sucks that someone unloaded on you because you described the principal as a big, black man. Now you know that people may find that offensive, and you can weigh the value of using that description versus consideration for other peoples' feelings.
Many people who are visual thinkers will use colors to describe things.I may say I saw a red dog and a black and white spotted dog playing.Im just describing the scene I saw.It depends on the way the word is used.
Didn't the word thug come from India and was thuggee?I just use it to describe criminals of any color.
On the home front here some one vandalized a racist sign in Harrison and I'm glad.

No, actually I know that one oversensitive twit found it offensive. Not that most people do. Most people have agreed with me. Except for that other guy who is worried about it when people suspect that the homeless might just possibly be on drugs. I give less than two s**ts for either of their opinions. I've sort of noticed that most don't think that way.

I think the word Racism is over used these days.
There was a member on here that kept banging on about us Aussies being racist because of concerns about Sudanese gangs.
And about Aborigines burning our flag which she thought was alright to do.
when we celebrate Australia Day.
It just seems like there's and anti western thing going on making us out to be evil so as far as I'm concerned its reverse racism.
I think you both have a right to burn flags.Would they be charged with treason or is that just your opinion? Its better to burn flags than people,I see it as a peaceful way to protest. As long as someone doesn't get the red ass over a piece of cloth being burned.

MY flag is a privately owned piece of multi-colored cloth. What I do with it is MY business and not the business of the government.

There is plenty wrong with it for one thing its treason.
If we did that to their flag we would be called Racist there's that word again.
In the aborigines defence, they never pledged allegiance to your flag.
White europeans imposed themselves on them without their consent. If thats all aborigines are doing, all things considered i think white aussies got off lightly.
Personally I don't understand why even white Aussies like their own flag. I mean one quarter of it is dedicated to the UK.
I don't agree with banning flag burning on principle. The moment you outlaw it you silence a means of publically registering dissaproval at the actions of a country.

I think this is the ONLY item of laissez faire philosophy that you and I will agree on.

From what I read the Spanish and the dutch passed by our area before the british and irish settlement if either of them stopped here there wouldn't have been an aboriginal left standing.
The reason the uk flag is on our flag is because of our Brittish heritage that we're supposed to be ashamed of.
Let's not forget the convicts were sent out here without THEIR consent.
The United States has instituted racist practices like college admission preferences, hiring preferences based on race, so the government promotes racism, and supposed anti-racist groups support these racist policies.
It is done cleverly too. Like a "white-Hispanic" person who looks white can claim racial preference based on coming from a Latin American country like "Brazil" by identifying as "Hispanic".
"Hispanics" are supposedly discriminated against, so certain white people need an advantage over other white people. If I change my citizenship to a Latin American country, and then re-immigrate into the U.S., then I can be immediately recognized as a discriminated person and get a racial advantage.
If the government will practice racism, then it seems natural that people will learn to be racist.
I'm far from racist. Far from it. I've taught my kids that racism is wrong, it's something that is part of history and we should learn from it and not repeat it
Why is racism wrong? Can't some racist beliefs produce positive outcomes ?
I can see parents tell their kids that they want black grandkids, and not to date a white person ? That is racism and seems reasonable ? Is there something wrong with parents wanting grandchildren that look like them ?
What about parents that see the criminal justice statistics and say "stay away from that race .." cause they are statistically more likely to be dangerous or involved in crime; isn't that just being smart and caring for your child ?
I live near Detroit, MI United States which is 90% black, and if you are white, then you do not go walking around there. Black people have told me that - I will possibly be killed because I am white.
You have to be racially-aware because of race-crimes.
I don't think race is the divider. Wealth, intelligence, education is what divides people.

Yeah. I have no idea what that paragraph in the OP about the word "thug" has to do with anything. A 'thug' is just another word for 'goon', or a 'strong arm', employed by a gang leader to enforce. Thugs can come in any skin color. It never had anything to do with race, and continues to have nothing to do with race. In pop music Black hip hop artist call themselves 'thugs' ( like "the bone thugs in harmony") as part of thier posturing to create an underworld image. But its to create an image for one slice of african american music. Its got nothing to do with ethnic idenity. Its like saying that the word "cowboy" is 'racist slur' against European Americans because most Nashville recording artists style themselves as 'cowboys'.
