Federal pay gap widens

Have you done the pension calculation ? At 60k the pension is rather small.
( Average( High 3 salary)) * (factor of 1.1% or higher for law enforcement) * years in service )
(60,000 * .011 * 30 years = $19,800/ year for your pension
( Average( High 3 salary)) * (factor of 1.1% or higher for law enforcement) * years in service )
(60,000 * .011 * 30 years = $19,800/ year for your pension
That's more than what most people will get. Plus, you get your TSP and social security.

I was calculating sonofghandi's pension.
My pension will 2.5 to 3.5 times that. Most people where I work retire at a $158,000 base pay high 3 salary. I was pointing that out to sonofgandi based on his consideration to change to another federal job.
(158,000 * .011 * 40 years) = $63, 200 per year for most retirees in my job category where I work , assuming one does not take a higher up "executive" job, if so then the pension would be higher
Interesting to note also: Employees will relocate to San Francisco their last 3 years to "bump up" their pensions because San Fran has the highest pay locality i.e., your pay is supplemented the most living in San Fran, because of the high cost of living, and they will use that higher amount in the pension calculation. This will be something I will have to consider doing.

I also have 4 college degrees and 3 professional certifications. To keep my current job (after it was redefined to include the job responsibilities of a recently eliminated higher level position), I am required to be working towards (and obtain) a more specific MS, plus work towards another specific certification. I have more education and technical certification than the vast majority of executive management anywhere in this country, just not the "right" ones.
My student loan payments are more than twice my rent payment (which has doubled since 2010), even after using every penny of the GI Bill and working for my entire college career.

DANG! Did you CHOOSE to get those 4 degrees or did your job force you to do it?
I've set an emphatic NO to further college education as my current credentials actually are keeping me from getting a decent job (overqualified), and frankly, if the job isn't significantly bumping up my pay, there is no way I could justify the cost of pursuing the degree on my own dime.
The first 2 were my choice. Got me my first living wage job. The next two each got me a higher position. Now I need one more to keep this newest one.

Are any of your degrees in a scientific, medical, engineering field ? My agency hires for those degrees.
My most recent is a Master's in Healthcare Administration. I also have a BS in Clinical Radiation Sciences. Time in the Health Physics field, Therapy field. Plenty of experience with regs for DOT, HAZMAT, HAZWOPER, EPA, DOE, NRC, FDA, USP, audits, gap analysis, records review, emergency response, QC, QA, on 3 committees, procedure and policy writing. In the Navy I was a nuclear machinist. So experience and education in all three.

You may want to consider working at the U.S. Patent office "PTO", if you decide to change jobs. It is a good job for an AS person, because we can work from home and set our own hours. Further, writing/arguing with lawyers is a big part of the job, and you are likely an expert at that based on your participation here
I have met people with twenty years in the military that did not take the military pension, so they could go to the PTO and get a much higher one. I think the "Radiation Science" might qualify you for one the medical units - you would have to call them. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
note: "years of federal service" transfer.

Checked out the PTO job postings. I could easily handle the job responsibilities for every opening posted, but I doubt I would make it past the HR screening as my qualifications and education are not exactly what they are looking for. Don't suppose you have a number for a department/office that I could call to ask about transfer possibilities?

Look here ... http://www.uspto.gov/patents/resources/ ... ation/art/ .. and identify the art units that match the area you would like to work ...
1600-1700s are Chemistry / Organic Chemistry / Biology areas ... for example
Then find the art units here, first by technology area, http://www.uspto.gov/about/contacts/pho ... /index.jsp
Call the phone number and ask that unit when they are hiring ...or how do you get into that unit ...
Alternatively, you can wait .. right now as you see they want generic degree people in EE, CE, ME, Bio Med, Industrial Engineering . Your present completed coursework may qualify you into one
Here is "Biomedical Examiner"
https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/359697100
note: They put new job openings up for different units every month or so. My unit is Computer Architecture and we are always hiring.
When will they put up "Radiation Science" units ? I don't know. That is a specific area.
If I was not helpful enough, then let me know ..
