Quote:
Baudelaire
By Delmore Schwartz

When I fall asleep, and even during sleep,
I hear, quite distinctly, voices speaking
Whole phrases, commonplace and trivial,
Having no relation to my affairs.

Dear Mother, is any time left to us
In which to be happy? My debts are immense.
My bank account is subject to the court’s judgment.
I know nothing. I cannot know anything.
I have lost the ability to make an effort.
But now as before my love for you increases.
You are always armed to stone me, always:
It is true. It dates from childhood.

For the first time in my long life
I am almost happy. The book, almost finished,
Almost seems good. It will endure, a monument
To my obsessions, my hatred, my disgust.

Debts and inquietude persist and weaken me.
Satan glides before me, saying sweetly:
“Rest for a day! You can rest and play today.
Tonight you will work.” When night comes,
My mind, terrified by the arrears,
Bored by sadness, paralyzed by impotence,
Promises: “Tomorrow: I will tomorrow.”
Tomorrow the same comedy enacts itself
With the same resolution, the same weakness.

I am sick of this life of furnished rooms.
I am sick of having colds and headaches:
You know my strange life. Every day brings
Its quota of wrath. You little know
A poet’s life, dear Mother: I must write poems,
The most fatiguing of occupations.

I am sad this morning. Do not reproach me.
I write from a café near the post office,
Amid the click of billiard balls, the clatter of dishes,
The pounding of my heart. I have been asked to write
“A History of Caricature.” I have been asked to write
“A History of Sculpture.” Shall I write a history
Of the caricatures of the sculptures of you in my heart?

Although it costs you countless agony,
Although you cannot believe it necessary,
And doubt that the sum is accurate,
Please send me money enough for at least three weeks.

Satan is the representation of anything that further our pain and suffering and that which accelerate death. Indifference never helped anybody survive a wolf attack.

Satan is a metaphorical representation of our inner suffering?

Who gave you THAT idea?

Could it be ...

Yeah, I admit. He has scared the living crap out of me for a long time...

I'm completely new to the subject. I just realized what he is today.

Need to pick up something to read on it...

Not so much spreading of ideas but think i did.. maybe not what you intended but I did think.

a question:

If a believers faith in God is what keeps him strong and can keep him on the right path, why should any christian (I say christian as satan is a christian construct, Islam uses Iblis I believe and various other names in other cultures and religions.) ever need to fear satan?

(btw, it's also why I like to call so called satanists, Catholics. You have to be a christian to believe in Satan in the first place)

If he (Satan) is as tricky as people say, surely total belief in God will protect them against anything he may try to perform, should it not be only those who are unaware that are susceptible to his charms?

It feels to me that only someone with shaky faith would need to use fear of Satan to strengthen his faith instead of love for his God?

Fear of punishment and eternal damnation is not the reason for doing the right thing surely, that would make the reasons selfish and therefore negate the act itself as un pure and show a lack of faith in God and send you to hell anyway?

Just curious as always.

I realize you've been here before. There is something familiar about those words...

I'm not religious - I don't fear any eternal damnation. I fear stagnation. I fear death. But only because I love life. In death itself it becomes irrelevant.

(I could explain why I chose to use the word "Satan", but why? You know why; It's my cultural bias - and having a lack of a better term.)

Satan is merely a human construct. Nothing more. The evil is in us all and we either choose to be evil or not. Some people are evil and not aware. Good deeds can be interpreted as evil to some. Flaws exist everywhere, even in acts in the name of good.
