I don't think they are wilfully ignorant; they are just set solid in their world view and nothing and nobody is going to change that, even when they are presented with facts that contradict their dogmatic assertions. They find it easier to deny the truth than to turn their belief system upside down and face the internal pain and turmoil of re-evaluating often what are deeply held beliefs. Those beliefs may be critically important to their coping mechanisms in life or have helped them through tough times. There is at least one member who posts in this forum that I'd apply this analysis/description to. Nobody will ever change his belief systems, numerous people have pointed out his repeated misconceptions and errors about science but he carries on repeating the same errors and misconceptions regardless and he would likely defend them until his dying breath rather than acknowledge to himself that he's got it wrong.
Does it start with Lee?

Even though I'm Catholic, I avoid Bible thumpers whenever they're in my area. Most are annoying beyond belief!

Who are "them"? People seem to have wildly different ideas of what constitutes one. And most times that I hear this expression, "bible thumper", it seems to be a thinly veiled insult directed towards Christians in general, especially American Christians.

So here's a better question: Are heavily critical skeptics of Christianity being willfully ignorant of the huge chunk of people that couldn't be further from the stereotype?

To me a bible thumper is a fundie evangelical that tells everybody they are going to burn in hell if they are not baptized, gay, living in sin,and that if you play Led Zepplin Stairway to heaven backwards it's satanic.I live in the Bible Belt, put up with Southern Baptist all my life.
I know Christians that are decent, but they don't judge others. The Thumpers do.Like the Westboro's.And there is nothing good about them.

Biblical Literalists have scooped out their eyes and their brains willingly and enthusiastically. Anyone who takes the Bible literally has cut himself off from modern science. The Bible is a Book of Tales for late bronze age dues who believe the earth is flat, the sun goes around the earth and who do not know that things are made of atoms. For the Biblical Literalist pi will always remain equal to three.

"Are Bible thumpers willfully ignorant?" Yes, and also all aspies are a disgrace because of CWC and Sonichu.

It doesn't say anywhere in the Bible that the sun goes around the earth. The Biblical tale of creation actually fits in quite nicely with the current model of the universe, even up to the point of the universes expansion according to the current theory behind the big bang and atomic theory.

Oh and btw "Literalist" is not an actual word in the English language. Just thought you might like to know as long as you are trying to sound all hoity toity up there

There are however idiots who proclaim the name of the Bible, many many of them.

There are Christians to this day who argue that Earth is the fixed, immovable center of the universe. You may have elected yourself the Pope and the only source for the true interpretation but you're going to have to show some ID to your fellow believers.

Genesis has little to do with science or reality and a lot to do with Babylonian and Egyptian beliefs. The local superpowers from who the Jews borrowed long standing ideas.

That is how TallyMan portrays me, but his allegations are completely false. I make no dogmatic assertions, I do not use beliefs as coping mechanisms, and I continually re-evaluate everything. If you look closely, you will see that my thread being locked proves the point I was making that some things are controlled by people actually doing as I have been charged.

No leejosepho, it proves that you can't see how stuck you are in your belief system.

You seem to think EVERYTHING is religion, and sure you're entitled to think that way, but most of the rest of the world sees a difference between religion and science.

You never posted anything new in that thread that was locked but kept bringing it back to life by posting the same drivel that was debunked, then a few days later you would post it again and it would be debunked again, then you'd post it again.

And apparently you STILL don't understand what we are trying to share with you. Open your mind a little please. It is very difficult for anyone to converse about anything with someone who views everything as religious.

I did not see any evidence in that locked thread that you re-evaluated anything. In fact, you were posting the same drivel you posted a couple years back when you and I had similar exchanges in PPR back then. And you STILL quote Kent Hovind as if he were someone that could be considered a reliable resource when he is a proven liar who has gone to prison for fraud.

Are Bible thumpers willfully ignorant?

I think "willingly deceived" would ultimately be more accurate for at least some. I grew up in what I now call a "KJV-only cult" (King James Version only), but the ignorance that was there was not always willful. What happens, however, is that people end up with too much time and effort invested in past beliefs to be willing to re-evaluate much of anything whenever some new information might come along...and especially whenever someone's (such as a preacher's) paycheck would be affected when parishioners might find their past "ignorance-is-bliss" comforts being affected. For example, I once asked a long-term-contracted pastor why he continues to have Christmas celebrated within the assembly now that he knows it does not belong there, and he said, "Because the people like it."

so if you understand how people can get stuck in past beliefs, why haven't you checked out the evidence for evolution or investigated how much of a liar Kent Hovind is and how wrong he is in almost every statement he makes about evolution?

Practice what you preach, brother!

Show me an example of Christians who think the Earth is the fixed unmoving center of the universe. The Bible literally says that the Earth was set in to motion. You logic is that I dont speak for all people who read the Bible but that the people who are wrong do. You are very delusional.
