If the good "conservatives" you describe are voting GOP, then they are not voting in accordance with their values and interests. The GOP is a party of robber barons and corruptionists who fear monger, scapegoat and kick the s**t out of minorities in order to seduce the most vile and ignorant poor people into voting against their economic interests.

The things you are associating with "conservatism" are shared values between liberals and conservatives. The difference is enforcement. Conservatives believe it's the government's job to intervene in our lives to enforce a very limited set of lifestyles and liberals believe that the government should only intervene when harm is being inflicted.

One exception is gun rights which tbh is something I can understand as a "conservative" social facet that liberals don't share or understand, mostly because of demographic differences.

Is that really funny? I am not at all surprised that liberals want to pick on far right, homophobic, racist, paranoid, hypocrite conservatives.

It is something of a shock map (it makes Mississippi and Colarado stand out more than they really should do), but it seems to be largely accurate: http://www.gallup.com/poll/167642/missi ... obese.aspx

One possible explanation for what you observed could be that Mississippi people are just over the threshold for obesity, but Illinois people are less likely to be obese but more likely to be morbidly obese. Note that this is complete and utter speculation. Alternatively, it could just be sampling error on our part (polite way of saying "you didn't look properly" :P).

Yes, well I'm sure you've been to all of those places and can verify the validity of that map.
What would a dumb American like me know about anyplace I've been?

Whatever m8. You might ironically call yourself stupid, but, ironically, you actually are stupid if you think being somewhere and having a little look around is a better way of telling about it than looking at systematically collected statistics. Mississippi has higher rates of obesity than Illinois.

And if you believe all statistics just because they're labeled statistics, especially the ones that you want to validate your prejudices, you're stupider.

Why wouldn't I want to pick on the extreme conservatives? Some moderate ones are tolerable.
The Arkansas Rockerfellers were ok for Republicans. My family is conservative, tried to raise me to be a Republican princess(they failed),they vote a straight Republican ticket.I'm the black sheep of the family. So I know ALL about conservatives.I had holiday dinners with a pack of them for years.
If you are blue collar, they are not your friend.

I know, thats why that particular dogma is so frustrating. The context of the guns is different. Guns in cities are not primarily used for sport and are not generally a positive facet of urban culture. They are associated with gang violence. Guns in the country, however ARE used for sport or just collecting and serve an important social function. The problem is not the different beliefs, it's the application on a federal level and portability that is so problematic.

Gun enthusiasts in both the country and urban environments use guns for sport. But while target shooting or hunting isn't some great societal evil, inner city kids with guns use each other for target practice. The problem is not Irresponsible Legal gun owners, it's irresponsible gun vendors eg black markets which benefit from main-street marketplaces and distribution.

I will point out, however that nothing in my statement was conflicting. Gun can be and are tools of harm and so restricting them fits within the liberal mindset because nothing restricts another person's freedom like killing them.

I post some data.
You disagree.
I post some more data.
You say your experiences count more than data because I'm not American.
I point out that this is stupid.
You call me stupid because I am using facts.
Do you see why people call you a troll?

What you should have done is post something like this, which shows that the South is not the most obese region, and the Great Lakes area has significantly higher underreporting than the South East: http://www.uab.edu/news/latest/item/335 ... study-says

However, I cannot access the journal article at 2:30 AM, so I cannot see if they do a breakdown by state. It does not appear that they do. There would need to be a 9 point swing for Illinois to catch Mississippi, and more than that for there to be a noticeable difference.

If you want people to respect you and your opinions, you need to support them with facts.

And no, I do not "believe all statistics", and I do not believe things just because they validate my worldview (though I admit that it is unlikely that I am different from any other human in this regard, and I am likely to be more accepting of things that validate my worldview). Funnily enough, people from Mississippi being fat is not a central tenet of my philosophy of life. However, I'll believe peer-reviewed statistics ahead of the casual observations of an internet randomer, just like any sensible person would. If I told you that every person from Scotland owns five pairs of bagpipes, would you believe me just because I live in the UK?

I hope that is enough bait-taking for you.

Also OP one thing I should point out is that conservative lifestyles favor conformity above all else, where do you think autistics and aspies fit in that picture?

It's too costly to enforce this ideal.
Not everyone can succeed in the framework you suggest.

Literally no one has said that in this thread. You have claimed that conservative values are better for society, but have offered no evidence to support that, and haven't dealt with the arguments used against you...

Bill, could you define a "progressive lifestyle" (or a "liberal lifestyle") for me, please?
