it allows to union members to play ball with the big corporate players
im very for unions as long as they represent the worker members
im working a union job right now and I have only worked for a few months now
the union has gotten our money from the company that pays us multiple times now after they have tried to screw us out of overtime and rain day pay

My Dad had been a union grievance man (shop steward), and I've always have had pro-union sentiments. Thanks to the union, my parents were able to own their house free and clear, my Mom didn't have to work outside the home after they were married, we were able to enjoy a middle class lifestyle, and neither of my parents needed to worry after my Dad retired.

^Add to that super PACs and religious organizations.

There are lobbyists for every sector of every industry, as well as every special interest group. There are very few large corporations that do not have their own private lobbying firms on retainer (with many having their own lobbying department).

If conservatives are for less government....why do they try passing laws to invade peoples personal lives. Pretty sure mandatory drug testing was a conservative idea. Also I've heard plenty of conservatives that think anyone receiving any kind of welfare should be heavily monitered by the government because depending on government help is reason not to have as much freedom as others. The conservatives want less government when it comes to things like taxation used to support the infastructure and public or regulations on corporations and what not...but when it comes to peoples personal lives, what they do in their own time, and gay marrige for instance they want the government interfering and telling people how to live.

Also I'd have to look it up, but if I remember right the democratic party of that time had more of a resemblence to todays conservative party...so who was really pro-segregation and slavery?

Outside of the greater Spokane area, much of eastern Washington is very red.

How do that figure that?More people are becoming opened minded about same sex marriage,interracial marriage,use of marijuana,race relations,human rights,gay and lesbian's right to serve,seems like it's getting more liberal to me.

Well, a segment of society is becoming more liberal and open minded. But there is still a reactionary element that is very vocal and active in their opposition of all those good things you had listed. Just read the posts on Yahoo News, if you can stomach it, and you'll see what I mean. People who believe they are under siege react with everything from mere vitriol, to some act of violent lunacy, as recently at those Jewish community centers in Missouri.

Doubtlessly, a good many are. But I have no doubt that many others are quite sincere in their hate and loathing.

It seems uncharitable and simplistic to equate conservatism with closed-mindedness. To be open-minded is to be willing to consider others' views; it does not require the adoption of those views, so an increase in open-mindedness cannot imply that more people are adopting liberal values.
