Recent Asian immigrants may be bringing Buddhism, and folks in SA may be exploring Buddhism. But there is no part of Africa that Ive heard of with a long pre modern tradition of Buddhism.

You never know what is going to happen in the future.

That's what I am saying, it's likely that islam will happen in the future over there. If we're talking about religion in Africa it's worth mentioning it.

Huh?

Islam HAS been in Africa since a fortnight after Islam started ( Americans tend to forget that Egypt and North Africa are all part of Africa).

Christianity ALSO has a long history in Africa. There were Black African Christians before there were any British Christians.

In ancient times first Christianity, and then Islam, spreading across the northern third of Africa (with Islam mostly replacing christianity except in Ethiopia). But niether penetrated much into the pagan southern two thirds (subsaharan) Africa (to make a long complicated story short). But then christian missionaries made inroads into africa in the recent centuries that followed the European age of discovery.

But its the coming chapter of history that could be lively reading. The still largely pagan part of africa is now seen as a place to expand into by both Islam and Christianity in the 21st Centurey. And some members of both faiths view the other as active rivals for the souls of subsaharan africans. Doesnt bode well for peace in africa.

Who knows? Maybe Buddhism will be a third force that will somehow diffuse a coming conflict between islam and christianity in subsaharan africa.
