Its amazing how conservatives in America are fast to whine about their precious "freedumbs"on guns but when it comes to intrusive legislation like the patriot act and online policing they don't give a damn.
I'm not a conservative, I'm a libertarian, and I have no problems with people having guns.Guns do have uses other than killing people. I am also quite adamantly opposed to the erosion of civil liberties via network monitoring, and the load of totalitarian w*k known as 'Homeland Security'.
FWIW, This is the same as my EDC utility knife(Kershaw 1670BLKST):
People have commented on the fact that it looks 'mean' but oddly enough they have no problem when I use it for utility purposes to bail them of a tight spot when a knife is needed but they do not have one. -- I have been carrying pocket knives as EDC since I was 17, and never once have I pulled one in anger, or out of fear.
That being said, I wonder if somebody like you who lives in a velvet gloved police/surveillance state has things better after all of the civil liberties that we take for granted here in the US,( the right to bear arms, freedom of assembly, not be monitored by The State and Rupert Murdoch, as well the right to watch TV uninterruped by having some w*ker from the Beeb knocking on your door to see if you're up on your licence to watch reruns of 'The Simpsons' and 'The Eastenders' and other craptastic programming} has a better life? Do you feel safer knowing that you been denied access to tools to defend yourselves against getting ratpacked by roving bands of Chavs and Football Hooligans, knowing that you have NHS to patch you up again? --So, do you think the quality of life in jolly Olde Airstrip One better than we have?

Yeah, that made a lot of sense.

BTW, Thomas wants us to have stricter gun laws (read that total ban) because he's sick of seeing all of our gun violence on the news.

Knifes of the domestic variety at least, have multiple utilities.
Guns have only one. For some reason almost every developed country on Earth finds a way around that utility. Also i'm fairly certain that its not just liberals who want guns banned in America any more than all American liberals want to ban guns (which isn't all).
both knifes and guns were designed solely to kill, both now have many uses.
Target shooting, no killing
shooting competitions, no killing,
hunting is killing but not to the original purpose of killing humans
recreational shooting.
defense from animals
there are some used to planet seeds,
some shotguns are used to trim trees,
theres probably other uses, but mine are rather limited as I don't interact much with people out of my group.
during the 2013 anti gun attempt , i remember reading a article from the uk, they were trying to ban kitchen knifes since they are solely used to stab people, they went so far as to get chefs to agree that a long pointed knifes aren't needed for cooking. they wanted to ban any knifes with points and knifes of a certain length. I don't think they got the ban.
to an extent the slippy slop does exist, as they attempt to solve murder and crime by banning objects as this won't work they will need to continue to ban more objects. indiana said they would only ban the so called assault weapons, but then they tried to pass a law banning bolt action rifles(those guns almost every hunter uses.) they deemed them sniper rifles. to the anti gun nothing is never enough until all guns are banned. after such it would seem natural to move to banning larger knifs not used for cooking, but then as in the uk case the long or pointed knifes etc.

Knives have a vast range of legitimate domestic and business uses. Being equipped with a knife is almost essential in a wide range of construction, distribution, shipping and retail jobs.
Knives are also a lot less dangerous than guns. Decades of research have shown that the mortality rate from gunshot wounds is consistently much higher than for stab wounds.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24387925
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2911188
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9107323
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24417825
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23522451
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15839970
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11164395
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10692193
The treatment costs of gunshot wounds are also substantially higher than for stab wounds:
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/ar ... 7597000079
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8158713
Add to this that - among survivors - the prognosis and recovery from knife wounds is also much better than for gunshot wounds, as the latter cause more permanent and long-term effects.
I don't want to live after being stabbed 40-60 times. that isn't life, being unable to move or do anything not even able to end it.
and those who train can kill with a knife in one stab or slice.
I don't care about treatment costs, isn't that what the obama care is for, also I don't think cost should be used a a reason to restrict rights, should we use riot damage cost as a reason to ban the 1st amendment.

You forget or aren't aware of who you're addressing. To a committed, uncompromising socialist, universal disarmament and the totalistic subjugation of the citizen's material well-being to the State's discretion, are the traits of a positively delightful Utopia. You're trying to convince O'Brien of the evils of Ingsoc.

We're "banning" carrying knives, because it's a great way of getting yourself stabbed. Again, common sense exceptions exist. I am completely unaware of any attempt to outright ban the sale of kitchen knives.

One of a number of proposals that have been floated in the UK regarding rounding off sharp kitchen knives, which as a working cook, I can tell you is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard, even for the UK.

Got a source demonstrating the utility of knife carry bans in reducing violent crime?
You might also have a harder time convincing people of the need for such laws. Guns are one thing, you never had all that many of them in the first case and you never really had much gun crime either, just a few sensational incidents that were taken advantage of to push through the current restrictive regime, but knives are a different story, everyone owns at least one, and it's much harder to misinform people about and demonize an item that they already own and use regularly. Then again, the public in the UK often seems dishearteningly eager to trade liberty for the illusion of security, so I may be overestimating the push-back.

As many people as there are carrying pocket knives, that's absolutely absurd.

If that's the case, at what age are English babies dropped on their heads to produce such f***ed up logic, and what type of Pomp & Circumstance are involved in this ceremonious event??? --This is like Monty Python becomes reality.

Spend more time focusing on domestic issues and you'll hear loads of stupider ideas

You and your "violent crime"... you know damned well that isn't the point. Not all violent crimes are equivalent.
There isn't a lot of research on this matter beyond raw statistics, which can be found [url=http://www.parliament.uk/briefing-papers/SN04304.pdf]. Of particular note, in 2008 this was a "button issue" with the sort of media storm that accompanies your quarterly mass shooting, because there was a month with a lot of stabbings in London. There was a major crackdown in 2009, and, well, check the graph on page 5... unfortunately the political will dissipated, or we'd know whether that effect could be maintained.
And for what it is worth, the measures taken since 2008 aren't "new laws" (just enforcement of existing ones), and the public don't need convincing of them. Here's a summary of the law, if any of it seems like an unreasonable infringement of liberty then fire away: https://www.gov.uk/find-out-if-i-can-bu ... ry-a-knife

The above is a Ken Onion design, though I have to admit that I am less than impressed with the current Sandvik stainless that they use. I bent the serrated teeth cutting a tightly bound 3/16" ZipTie.
