People need to wake up to this militarization going on with our police, it is just a matter of time until they turn their guns on us. Barack Obama said that weapons of war have no place on our streets then how can he justify this?

Who says Obama justified it? Last I heard, he had been critical of the police abuse regarding reporters and non-violent protesters.

It appears the new "soft" approach is doing wonders to stop the looting and vandalism. Heh.

Some gems:

"The police are leaving us!"
"They're just over there, why aren't they stopping it!"

As civil disorder goes, I would consider this rather tame. AFAIK nobody has been killed or seriously injured (except of course for the incident that started it all). I haven't seen any video of ambulances rushing people to the emergency room.

You want to risk your life, try posting a live report from any one of a number of places in Syria I can think of. There are people who do that, almost all of them seem to be British. Not sure what that says about the British.

A climate is being created where some day somewhere in the US and for whatever reason a bunch of SWAT cops are going to completely open fire on a group of protestors. It's more a matter of when than if.

It has already happened - technically not the police, but the National Guard at Kent State University in the sixties.

If they don't crack down businesses get looted and business owners complain. If they appear too forceful the media and public complain, police withdraw, and businesses get looted. It's a common theme with these things.

The WTO stuff in 1999 was wilder. Police gassed thousands and thousands of people right in the middle of the city. There was a similar tension between protecting businesses and civil liberties that quickly broke in favor of business owners. And voters don't like to see glass on the streets.

I heard a report early this morning on CNN how protestors had tried to stop looters from breaking into stores. Sadly, they were not ultimately successful.

That's a horse of a different color by virtue of it being a situation that the National Guard should not have been called in for. That was over 40 years ago and the police werent as militarised like they are now. Having the cops handle a situation like that nowadays might very well precipitate a Kent State type (or worse) incident.

I'd probably feel safer with actual soldiers, these cops lack intelligence and basic discipline. They lie and abuse their authority, they're no different than a street gang in a lot of ways. I think it should be mandatory that all LEO wear body cameras in this country, they'll start acting a lot better knowing they're being watched. The cops in this country are always on edge, they're scared by everyone and trigger happy as a result of it.

That is true.

Also, the locals called the anti-riot stuff down on themselves with all the looting.

I have no idea why anyone thinks looting and burning down local businesses actually accomplishes anything.

I heard that the looters were actually coming from other towns and taking advantage of the situation.
