If inflammatory means taking on the big controversial subjects then inflammatory is a good thing.
I have never enjoyed conversations about the weather and/or if burger king or McDonalds have the better hamburger.

Evolution (often times), doubters the faith, non-believers having any authority, atheists, laws not based on that religion's teachings, those dismissive of their beliefs, those who make sweeping stereotypes based on the words/actions of a minority, persecution (real and imagined) being mistreated/insulted because of their faith, desecration of their holy symbols/texts, etc.

What exactly do you think upsets Muslims more than someone belonging to a different faith?

Depends on what you want it for, doesn't it?

Science can tell me what is messed-up about me. It can tell me how it's messed-up, how it got messed-up, and how it would work if it weren't messed-up.

It cannot tell me why it's messed-up. All science can say is that it's hereditary, or bad luck, or an environmental toxin or collection thereof. Random. Whatever. It cannot supply me with a Big Why.

For that, I need philosophy, or religion.

Philosophy and religion can give me good whys that make me feel better (indeed, even not messed-up at all) or bad whys that make me feel even worse. But at least they can give me answers.

Science is probably more correct if you need data.

If you're looking for gestalt, or raison d'etre, or whatever word you prefer for what I call Big Why or "a reason to keep getting out of bed in the morning," then religion/philosophy is probably more likely to yield useful results.

Religion can't tell you why. Having answers doesn't mean they are the right ones. Unless there is some method to ensure the answers are right, they are useless.

Philosophy is science. Science even used to be called Natural Philosophy. It uses logical systems to arrive at conclusions.

^So the outrage over Aaron McGruder's Black Jesus doesn't compare? How about the anger and hostility over the recent Noah's Ark movie?

And as for apostasy, do you know someone who grew up in an extremely religious household who became an atheist? If you have, ask them how their family likes their loss of faith. Quite likely it was not taken well.
