I'm confused about the whole thing. This happens often enough - we had one here last year (one death) - but *nobody* has a weapon to stop the bad guy. otoh, what I hear on the news is that hand guns are rife. I got the impression I might be one of the few people without one.

So I'm confused about such stiff opposition to gun control and total helplessness when attacked.

Sometimes people say they're confused when they mean 'criticize' - not me, i really am confused. I thought USA was bristling with weapons.

just heard a news report here. The same people that say there should be more gun control said the guy in Virginia used a 22mm and a 9mm which they called high capacity high powered.

These idiots don't know what they are talking about.

Guns exist. The pandora's box has been opened. Regardless of what is done with laws, people with have guns.

The primary difference you make if you outlaw guns is, only outlaws will have guns.

Kind of like what happened with drugs.

Look, I know 9mm guns are at the lower end of the power spectrum, but they kill you almost as well as a magnum. A magnum'd be messier, though. The only contexts where a 9mm would make a difference is in a law-enforcement or military conext, not against harmless civilians. Of course, the difference between a 9mm and a submachine gun or machine pistol is more noticeable, given more bullets and therefore (assuming a modicum of skill in using the automatics, or machine guns) more kills.

Bazza, just out of interest, what standard firearms are given to a soldier (infantry) in the field in the Australian Army? Assume I know little about gun names, but I know the difference between a handgun, rifle, shotgun, and a little about caliber.

Edit:
Standard sidearm is the Browning Hi-Power in 9x19MM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browning_Hi-Power
Squad Machine Gun is the FN Minimi in 5.56

General Purpose MG is the FN MAG in 7.62x51MM NATO

What kind of a f****d up thought is that?
'Someone killed 32 people WITH A GUN' leads to 'We should be allowed to carry SAID GUN to "protect ourselves" from situations like this'.
You guys "need" guns to protect yourselves from what?
OTHER GUNS.

It isn't 1880 anymore, you guys don't live in the Wild West anymore, act like it.

The major issue with that line of thinking is that there is a problem with banning guns. One, it is unconstitutional and we tend to not like messing with our constitution too much given the rather low number of amendments in the long period of time that the nation has existed. Two, to eliminate guns may be an impossibility, we could not eliminate alcohol back in the 20s and we cannot eliminate marijuana today, and guns have more popularity than both of those. Really sir, I would argue that our thoughts are not horribly messed up but rather rational in the context of the society we live in. You may not agree with the points made, however, that does not mean that we are irrational.

You must've missed my and SkaFather's posts. Let me just outline this for you:

Scenario A (current scenario): Gun-weilding criminals have guns, and law-abiding, defense-minded people also have guns. You don't have a gun.

Scenario B (guns are outlawed): Gun-weilding criminals still have guns, all law-abiding people do not have guns. You do not have a gun.

Do you see how this works? You have to be a little more logical about it. 'i don't like guns and don't want to be shot' does not directly logically link to 'guns should be outlawed.' It WOULD make sense if outlawing guns made them no longer exist, but that's not what outlawing does.

I absolutely hate guns, and have quite a phobia of them. Yet I do not think it would be a good idea to implement stricter gun control.

Also, to quote (paraphrase) the Republican chick from the West Wing.. "you don't like the people.. think about that the next time you make a joke about southerners and their guns"
