Cruz is a Princeton and Harvard educated man married to an executive at Goldman Sachs, that's why it is so funny to hear him castigate "New York values" when he comes from such an elitist background. He's a Tea Partier to the Tea Party, he's a preacher to religious right, he's some sort constitutionalist libertarian to the libertarian part of the party, he even is pandering to neocons now saying that he considers Snowden a traitor and that he wants to "make the sand glow" in Syria. Believe it or not but is seems like Trump is doing way better with Evangelicals than anybody expected, Cruz's victory in Iowa was more on the back of conservative Tea Partiers. There is a lot of overlap with all these groups, Trumps main demographic of underclass whites is largely pretty religious I imagine which should remind people that there are more important things than these wedge type cultural issues to care about right now.
It always struck me that the same people who castigate "New York" values are the same people who say the same thing about "San Francisco" values. It's all a matter of simplistically demonizing a whole community of people by assuming everyone in this or that place shares the same beliefs, which are portrayed in a negative light.
