That's part of it yes.

I'm not being politically correct obviously.

The real intention was to stimulate debate. There are lots things that can make us uncomfortable, not all of them are a good indication of public safety, or reasonable. "Creepiness" is less about safety and more an emotion revulsion.

In the seemly absurd examples there are thing that could be reasonable in the right context. There are obviously some that are taking the piss out of negative perceptions and stereotypes.

However, expressing an opinion however stupid is not a crime, and we shouldn't get hung up on initial reactions, so long as we can question ourselves.

Then there the idea that creeps are people too. Given that identity politics is all the rage, this is a little tongue in cheek from me.

Finally two of the examples are influenced by my real life experiences...

The flaw with that approach is the majority of such crimes are committed by someone known to the victim. Often those that are able to gain trust easily, or already have it or at the least use their association with the victim.

I study self defense. The worst thing you can do is rigidly "situationalise" or "characterise" certain crimes. It would leave you totally unprepared for real life, as they never play out exactly the same way twice.

Yes there needs do to be a good dose of common sense, however there are thing about self defense that are counter-intuitive.

"Creepiness" is not a good indicator of public safety. Following general principles are better becuase you assume nothing.

You should never assume.

The correct response to that is:

"No I prefer it, thanks for asking, how kind of you" :D

I've never had anyone try to warn me off of someone in a way that wasn't based on behavior; I have never tried to warn someone else off of someone in a way that wasn't based on behavior.

I wouldn't put it past some of the 'mean people (power-playing NTs)' out there to do so, but I don't think it's the main reason that people warn each other about other people.

'Watch out for him - if you get stuck in an elevator with him alone, he'll try to trap you against the wall between floors.'
'Watch out for the patient in room XX3 - he'll expose himself and jerk off if you go in alone.'
'Don't go down to the storeroom alone - Nxxxx is working today.'

There seems to have been a pretty big creep shaming thread here already:

viewtopic.php?t=222396

And it is a nasty thing people can do, they can make you into the creep and make that label stick causing all kinds of problems for you. You don't need to be a creep for people to think you are one. You can be made into one. And autistic people make easier victims for this than NTs because we can already be kinda creepy to NTs because we're not NT. It is very much an SJW tactic. They love labels and love sticking them on people they want out of the way. But anyone could do it.

LKL, you say you never had anyone warn you off someone for something not based on behaviour. But do you know for sure that behaviour described actually happened?

Not always, but often it's either substantiated by other people or substantiated by me when I (have to) go about my own job.

There's a specific look that I associate with the word 'creep,' and it's not 'socially awkward.' It's someone (almost always male) who looks at you like he's a starving tiger and you're a fawn. It's not about awkward lines of conversation or inappropriateness; it's about 'I would not be safe alone with this person, if he was sure that he wouldn't get caught.'

Again, there may be NTs who abuse the warning network, but far more often it's valid. I'm not sure that the average male understands how women have to walk around the world.
Men are afraid they will be creep-shamed or laughed at.
Women are afraid that they will be raped or killed.

So you're saying that men's fears are more rational than women's fears?

Or could it be that you have absolutely no idea what men actually fear? Fears, largely, are not things you can characterise by sex, are reliant on individual experiences.

Or are we going for the "well I didn't say all men and women"? In which case the opposite statements are equally valid.

Or is it just that you're unknowingly contributing to the problem by pre-judging and belittling the plight of the publicly ostracised as somehow petty because it's not as bad as being raped?

Your anecdotal experiences are skewed by those factors unique to yourself. I don't think it would be unfair of me to suggest that you have literally no idea of how severely social shaming effects men, especially those who are young or vulnerable. Even if we were to accept that your "warning network" is say 95% accurate (which I most certainly do not), that doesn't excuse those 5% of cases where it is used to crush undeserving targets.

There is no problem with taking sensible precautions.

I have encountered both a man an a woman, who gave serious warning signs by their behaviour. Usually it is something manipulative, deceptive, or involving physical contact. In my case it was a combination of the three in both cases.

The problem is when people start generalising about creepiness.

"creepiness" simply a feeling of revulsion.

Women are no more likely to be killed than men.

Men are more likely to be a victim of assault.

Truly, the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" of feminist arguments; not untrue, but so cliche that it causes involuntary eye rolling.

Hey, if it makes women feel better, you're far more likely to be raped and murdered by your partner rather than a "creep".

Say, you cheat on him and he loses it.

Hard to tell who'll lose it when a stressor happens. People can appear perfectly fine until then.

There is not enough humour and absurdity in this thread.

"Creep" is like that thing they teach you when young; stranger danger.

But in the end, the people you should be afraid of are the people closest to you that you don't think of as creeps. Secondly, it's the people you may associate with that you also don't think are creeps.

"Creepy loners" is overplayed to 90000000000 and all it does is stigmatize those with social disorders and other problems that make them loners and appear like creeps if they like someone and try to make contact.

So, next time you think bad of some loner that might be staring at you, you should really think bad of your husband or BF to a much greater extent. You should also think bad of yourself for being a jerk.

This lady knocked on my door, she had a thick accent so I couldn't really figure what she was talkign about. She said something about being "eclectic company", and she wanted to do a "reading" and had been round several times, when I was out.

I said I wasn't really interested in that stuff, and shut the door. This was just last week. Now my power has gone out and I'm sitting in the dark. I just know she had something to do with it, but can't prove it.

It's just funny, really.

"Creeps" are probably the least likely people to harm someone. And, they've probably got mental problems in many cases, so they're being punished because of that.

It kinda shows you who the real "creeps" actually are.
