My point was that we Americans have no compunction about killing chickens. So use a chicken instead of a campanion animal that we do have taboos about killing.
True.
I was thinking two kill birds with one stone (wow... if that's not a strange pun considering the subject matter...) was just a better idea. Who knows, lethal quantities of CO? Something that kills it humanely and leaves it in an edible state goes back in full to your example of chickens being killed in the food industry and in this case it would just be the very scientific killing (or not killing) of that chicken where it was killed it would be shrink-wrapped at the local grocery store like any other.
On a complete side note one of my own moral idiosyncrasies that's been growing over time is people doing silly things with store-bought meat like tagging their girlfriends while they're putting on makeup or doing other things where it's clear they have no intention to eat it afterward. In a way killing a food animal is a solemn event, ie. that animal is giving up its life for our sustenance. In a way it shows that we're psychologically disconnected from our food-source but just the disrespect factor involved, IMHO it's a bit like blowing coke off a fallen soldier's dog tag. Not that your experiment, even with an inedible chicken, would fall under that scenario but it's part of why - aside from your Colonel Sander's comment - that my thoughts went to an edible outcome.
Edible smoke detectors though? That's a whole other rabbit-hole. Maybe the culinary chemists out in Spain will devise that one.
