That's what they want you to think.

We just need to round up all the companies responsible for funding Middle Eastern wars and put them on trial for mass murder. It's that simple.

The lower class Republicans side with the war profiteers because they see the left as a threat.

In reality, the libertarians and paleoconservatives have been exposing ExxonMobil and Haliburton for years. We need to point out that the "war on terror" has created terrorism and refugees. We also need to emphasize that we are not anti-white, anti-male or anti-Christian. We could also throw in a rant against subsidies and regressive taxation.

Call me naive if you will. I think that most lower class Americans (Republican or Democrat) hate war. They just erroneously believe that war is a "necessary evil".

The people who love war are usually the big businesses who make money off it. They usually pay no taxes. They usually receive money from the lower classes through subsidies. Shouldn't taxation take from the rich and give to the poor? In America, the opposite usually happens. They're "too big to fail", even though they are destroying the planet through global warming.

I've known enough people from other countries to know that they have it better than most of us amuuricans do. these foreigners also know that most amuuricans don't comprehend this reality.

Maybe the grass really isn't greener on the other side, it is just a different shade of green.

the difference was spotted in the 1830s by none other than alexis de Tocqueville who said that the key determining feature of Americans that sets them apart from the rest of the world was that our guiding principal in undertaking any action, was "how much will this bring me?" we are more mercenary than any other western nation. more in love with money and power no matter who it hurts. there is more social consideration in other western nations. still the only western nation without truly universal health care, and the only western nation where higher education is systematically being priced out of the reach of the working class.

the point of the thread was that America could be such a better place if only enough people wanted it to be. but we are too riven by petty things to stand together and demand better.

Not everyone in those countries has it better.
Only the lower classes have it better!

i'm lower class so that is fine by me. I fail to grok why I should suffer so joe megabucks can get yet another goddamned tax cut and flashy bauble, especially when those tax cuts are paid for with increased fees on the working class [higher sales taxes and countless other nicks including higher fines for traffic [and other] infractions. those tax cuts don't come for free, somebody gotta pay for 'em and it is usually my class of people who bear the brunt of such.

The sanatation department does a good job of taking care of the crap where I am from. In mexico they crap in a field, and use newspaper to wipe their bunghole. Most don't even bury it. They literally crap on the neighbors property because they don't have a toilet. I love those videos of lazy people in lazy countries that have way too many children, and huge piles of garbage in the middle of the streets. It's actually not even a street anymore because it is full of trash. Kids digging through the stuff to find useful garbage. Drinking giardia. Living in a tar paper shack.

I am a mechanic, I fix cars. It is nice to not like what you do, but at least know you are doing something constructive.

Are you being constructive, or destructive? That is the million dollar question.

You can tell me how bad America is, when you are living under a bridge. Most of this complaining is very hypocritical. I see people who do not contribute, complain, and get a free life. Food, and shelter. Others who work very hard, and things may not pan out.

I pay! If you want something to be the way you want it, you are going to have to work for it just like everyone else does. That is just a start.

America is a great place for healthy, successful, wealthy people.

Mortgage rates are near 40 year lows.

I have two co-workers who recently bought million dollar properties.

in context of being a "first world" country? Thoughts? And please no cliche such as "Love it or leave it", as I for example, don't have the luxury of countries willing to roll out the welcome mat with my disability.

My 5 cents...

The good
- US private entrepreneurship is second-to-none
- The US has the strongest scientific community in the world*
- The US is the world leader in media (Internet, Movies, Television, Games)

The bad
- The US Political System is non-representative and non-responsive
- The US Criminal Justice System is of poor quality
- The US Education System is of poor quality.*
- The US Health Care System is extremely inefficient and mismanaged

The WTF?
The War on Drugs**

So it would seem that the US does very well when it comes to supporting economic activity. On the other hand, it doesn't seem to be very good at establishing justice and promoting the general welfare.

*Both of these can in fact be true at the same time, due to the inequality and polarization in educational achievements in the US.
**I know this is a subcategory of the Criminal Justice System, but the stupidity of this policy cannot be overstated
