Well that's an indictment of liberal democracy in general.

It isn't since anyone can run for Mayor, state senator or rep, even governor. President is the ceo of politics and its politics, not business. It isn't the same thing. Serving on the state senate prepares them. It's like a training period. If Trump wins I bet he will try to make America more like Russia but people think he is going to save them so that's why they vote for him. If you look closely you will see Trump doesn't have much in common with most Americans. He was born wealthy and privileged, he uses populism to lure underedecuted Caucasian Americans but he has a great education himself. They don't realize Trump is actually upper class preppy. He has fooled them into thinking he is working class with the same values when he is, in and, rich and has the values of elitists. They will be in for quite a surprise when they realize he will be like the ones they can't relate to. The gap between the working class and elite rulers will widen like it has for decades even if they elect Messianic Trump.

I couldn't have said it better. Trump's surrogates like Jerry Falwell Jr and others, all upper class themselves, repeat that line of bull that Trump is a "blue collar billionaire" for the benefit of the peons. Like there's really such a thing.

My guess is that Trump secretly wouldn't mind losing narrowly. That way he can go on claiming the vote was 'rigged' and still have a high profile whipping up anti-establishment feeling. If he actually wins ? Well then he'll have enormous responsibility as probably the most important person in the world and he'll also have to do a job that I don't think he has the experience or temperament to handle.

But doesn't someone who is x* enough to run for the most powerful political office in the world without experience plan to use government to serve interests that are inimical to your own?

*Fill in x as you please (stupid, immature, clueless, destructive, impulsive, narcissistic, etc.)

I don't know if this will make you guys who weren't for Trump feel any better, but I had a thought to share.

People in business and management operate mainly on delegation. There's no way you can know all the things, so you hire people who are subject matter experts (aspies are often subject matter experts in companies). You go to those people and ask them to tell you what's going on with this and that. They don't know it, but they are actually making the decision FOR you in that area.

That's the way something like a presidency is supposed to work as well. No one expects the president to be a military genius. Or a educational wizard. The people in his (or her) cabinet will make those policies and the president will implement them. Even if something big and unexpected happens, the president HAS to consult with people before doing things.

So I'd take a look at who is named to the cabinet positions. They might not be people you would mind.

But, we have books and the internet.

To the best of my understanding, Reagan made firm campaign promises, to the effect of "no insiders," then appointed an entire cabinet of Trilateralists. He posited that all of mankind could be brought together under an external threat and used the Star Wars project as a monolithic, public work.

Trump is somewhat comparable, in that there are aliens and a great wall.

But look at the people who will almost certainly be on his cabinet: Jeff Sessions, Rudy Giuliani, Chris Christie, just to name a few. All these men are known as bullies, and have been responsible for racial division.

Not fan of Trump, though Woodrow Wilson didn't begin reading before the age of ten and taught himself shorthand to deal with likely dyslexia. Truman didn't didn't complete a degree (although was pretty well read).

Trump is right that there is a broken system, but he is is indicative of it. It is simply too expensive to run for president, which is why there is such a poor choice. Either the candidate can be bought or they need really deep pockets.

The campaigns are way too long, even a quarter of the time would be sufficient. It detracts from the job of running the country. It is not as if there is a great deal of policy discussion during the campaigns. Mostly character and personality stuff.

What does Woodrow Wilson have to do with any of this?

The superposed barriers to becoming president. Did you read the rest of the post?

It pays to learn political history too.

Yes I did read it, more than once. Now I don't know what "superposed" (supposed?) barriers to becoming president has to do with the thread.

True. As I was going to reply, you do it like any company CEO, you hire the people best equipped to do the job at hand, and if they screw up, fire them, as I'm sure that Trump will do.

The OP is implying that Trump is too dumb to understand how government works, yet in reality is few do. Ask the average person on the street, their knowdge of the structure of government is very limited. Even experienced politicians still struggle with certain concept of democracy.

Many people don't even know how the electoral college works. They have no idea what faithless elector is for example.

Many people who have met me in real life have accused me of being boorish or a bully. I don't think I've ever been accused of that online, but online you can edit what you say. Some people have frank ways of speaking that can come off wrong. I can't tell you how many times I've slipped and said something by accident that offended someone and then had to apologize, or just throw up my hands and forget making a good impression.

Well, if you support someone like Trump, maybe that's something about yourself that's worth examining. Maybe those people are trying to tell you how you treat others is wrong and inappropriate. I mean, you work with people with disabilities and you politically support a guy who does and says things like this about disabled people:

Image

That's what a bully looks like, and you voted for him. So, maybe some time for self-reflection and reassessment.

That's fine for ordinary people like you and me, but these are men who are supposed to be versed in politics, which means they are supposed to be versed in handling others, but more importantly, themselves. Jeff Sessions is especially bad, as he's renowned as a racist and cracker.
