I hope you do get to come to the US sometime.
Flint, Michigan is about 150 km or so from Detroit, Michigan One of the main problems with Flint is that the General Motors plant there closed, there were mass layoffs, and many of the people laid off lived in Flint. Unemployed people get depressed, and don't maintain their homes and neighborhoods. But if you happen to come to Flint, all this wouldn't affect you, as a tourist. There are a couple of "attractions" there--but tourists aren't exactly flocking to this place.
You'll find out that the US, in general, really not what it seems to be based upon media portrayals. You'll find that you'll absolutely need a car in most parts of the US, so don't rely on public transportation unless you're in a very large, preferably "older" city. "Newer" cities tend to be more car-driven. You have idiots in the US--but most people just want to be left alone to raise their families, and they don't mind tourists, usually.
I heard New Zealand is a nice, pretty place.
I'm really of the opinion that people should "get out" more, and stop relying on the Internet so much when they are trying to assess people and places.
New Zealand is a nice place you could say, much of the beauty comes from the rural areas, a place like Auckland would be much like New Orleans or San Francisco.
I don't think most people in the US are racist, far from it.
I went to San Francisco recently and I found that it did match up with the prevalent stereotypes of the USA. I saw homelessness to much more of an extreme level than Auckland. In one incident I even saw a man completely oblivious to traffic walk across the road, shirtless intensely scratching himself and stretching. And this is every street corner I have basically come across.
Have you ever been to Michigan or one of the Rust Belt states?
